  • Your thoughts on "Baby" Joe Mesi

The Thread on Jerry Quarry got me thinking about Mesi, ex NY Golden Gloves champ, Power in both hands and a HUGE draw in Buffalo NY.

He was for a while HBO's heavyweight poster child but he ran into "The Russian Tiger" and was derailed with a head injury.

Your thoughts on Baby Joe, could he have gone all the way?

    Edit: Record 36 and 0 (29)

Yeah probably. One of the few undefeated fighters I really like and like watching. I like the symmetry of either someone who goes undefeated or avenges all of their losses and/or draws.

he was a good fighter but his chin and defense were suspect. I really think he would have got knocked out if he stayed around long enough to fight a top 10 guy with descent pop. light hitting monte barret put him down and hurt him badly along with jirov who wasnt a big puncher at heavyweight. good fighter tho and likeable guy

I always felt he had a conditioning problem. He stood up to punches well early but in the later rounds his trouble began. It was something apparent in the Monte Barrett and Jirov fights.

Liked him.. Would have stood a chance of one potting Wlad back then.. Had talent, but as already mentioned, suspect stamina.
One round ko of Davrarryl Williamson is memorable.

I enjoyed watching joe mesi, but its a shame what happened to him,,

I think he gets slightly overrated due to the undefeated record, I thought both jirov and monte beat him

Always wanted to see him vs tyson in MSG or him vs toney, or vs peter

Wasn't that good. Worse than tua, Rahman, sanders, maskaev, etc.

He was matched carefully during his build up. Not a bad fighter but his power and boxing skills would have been found to be deficient once he fought the top heavyweights.

Monte Barrett beat him but didn't get the decision IMO.

He was definitely better than Maskaev.

I can't picture Mesi knocking out Rahman two times and wiping the floor w Jefferson. Maskaev also has a lot of okay B level wins.
