Yes...You would be wrong in calling Jerry Quarry a gatekeeper.

Irish Jerry was highly ranked for a long time.

I believe at one point he was #2 in the world.

Was he ranked this during the period where Ali could not fight? And I know he was ranked highly, but if you think about it, it's like, if you could beat Jerry Quarry, you're probably world title material. And if you couldn't you probably weren't ready.
Because after the whole title eliminator thing, he never really got back into contention. Unless that eliminator was what you were referring to as him being #2 in the world.

        Bleeding.

In seriousness, he was a worthy contender in heavyweight boxing's greatest time. He would never beat the best of the best though.

The sadness of the tough Jerry and Mike Quarry bros., both suffering of dementia pugilistica.
I remember watching Jerry on telly being interviewed at the nursing home he lived in.
When being asked by the reporter: “Do you know in what sport you got famous in”, Jerry said “yes, baseball!”

When he fought Ali the 2nd time he was ranked #2 in the world.

Overall,I think Jerry gets underrated. He could ****ing fight man. He was tough as nails.

A very good but not great fighter. A top contender in a stacked era, maybe a champion in a weak era.

No, I was only referring to his physical stature.

I am sure you are aware that the average heavyweight fighting theses days is bigger than 6'0 205, no?
You'll probably be told that size doesn't matter when it comes to heavyweights.

That reminds me of a Sonny Liston quote. Before the first Patterson fight the commission doctor paid a routine visit to each fighter's dressing room to take their pulse and make sure they were okay. Liston was asked if he felt good about the upcoming fight. Liston just smirked and said "Doc, ain't no 185 pound mother****er gonna beat me".

I think Floyd's speed could've given him an upperhand if he could take one of Liston's shots.

He had 2 things working against him, his size and the era he fought in.

I have always loved Jerry Quarry. I get very sad thinking about his later life.
Yeah....It was quite a sacrifice he made, very sad indeed. Its a hard issue to wax the ear philosophical about isn't it? I mean if he could do it all over again would he?

Heres a bit of irony though: whether jerry Quarry won ten championships, or as history has it, he is one of the most respected fighting men ever to grace the square circle. More than just a goon who could take a shot Quarry was the archetype for the Fighting Celtic man.

And for what it is worth when his comparative size is mentioned the Foster victory would suggest the truth of that observation. Foster to many was a heckofa victory indeed.
