  • Roger Leonard

I watched an interview with Sugar Ray Leonard talking about Floyd Mayweather jr. He said his brother Roger believes Mayweather jr would have beaten him. Before anybody goes crazy about this, I think Leonard would have won the fight at 147. I would not pick anybody over Leonard at that weight. But the fact that Leonard's brother picks Mayweather says a lot.

What do you all think? Please, no NSB bullshi t. This is a serious question and I only respect answers in this section.

It says his brother doesn't think he could beat him. Being a sibling doesn't prohibit him from holding such an opinion.

Ray Leonard and Floyd are two greats. Its only an opinion but I think there are a couple of ways to look at this fight,

Young Ray Leonard got taken out of his game by Duran, because of Duran trash talking him and his actions against his family. Who is the biggest antagonist in the game. Floyd will trash talk you, insult you anything to get in your head. His 24/7 and faceoffs are memorable.

Size I think Leonard id the naturally bigger man and has the reach and speed is about equal. I saw the Leonard versus Mayweather SR fight and thought if he cant catch senior then what is he going to do with Floyd. I know Leonard looked bad missing and if he does that versus JR. He must and will pay believe me. Once floyd adjust he shuts everyone down. Would leornard trouble floyd. I think so for a few rounds but the thing that would have made this fight such a chess match is Leonards ability to adjust. He showed that in the Hearns fight. Going from the boxer to the stalker. Going from adversity to one punch hurting hearns and swarming him to eventually knocking him out. The only reason I give Leonard a chance in this fight is his size, his power, his stamina and his ability to adjust.

My ultimate pick would be Floyd by unamious decision.

Roger Leonard had a lot of talent, but fell short of expectations as a pro due to his substance issues. His brother's continued fame and money might well cause there to be a bit of brotherly jealousy still.

As for Ray Leonard vs Floyd Mayweather; its a great match.....but probably not the most entertaining fight for the fans.

Head to head, Leonard has advantages in power and he is the better combination puncher of the two. Dare I say his punch output and work rate are also greater. Mayweather is the more slippery and has probably the advantages in punch economy/accuracy. Both their chins and fighting hearts are beyond dispute.

If pushed, I'd probably lean towards Leonard at welterweight by close decision. The troubles that Mosley (albeit briefly) and an older De La Hoya gave Floyd did make me wonder how much better a prime Leonard would do!

I also sensed some jealousy on Roger Leonard's part. Thanks for confirming that because I thought it was just me lol.

The interview was on ESPN. Short but very interesting. Leonard also credited his brother Roger for the strategy in the second Duran fight. He said Roger Leonard told him to embarrass Duran and that Duran would quit.

Leonard KO's Floyd inside 12 in a 15 round fight! Floyd has no way to hurt Leonard, he has NO power! Leonard has the power to hurt Floyd and would stop him. The size difference is alot plus giving away power and speed is to much for lil' Floyd whose better at 135-140 when comparing him to greatwelters. He's far to small and is void of power punching.

            Mayweather...5'7" 147

            Leonard ...5'10" 147

            at bell time.....
            Floyd 152lbs
            Ray 160lbs

Most don't consider how small Floyd is at welter because he picks opponents that are equally short and don't punch hard. Ray

Yes, Roger had all the talent; it would be no surprise that he offered excellent strategic advice to Ray.

There was nothing stopping him becoming a multi millionaire pound for pound superstar himself, except his own substance weakness and inability to beat the habit and work hard. Ray beat his own ******* addiction; it is one of the reasons he is a rich boxing icon and his brother isn't.

That's a good analysis from you. But I don't agree that Mayweather only picks equally short opponents who don't punch hard lol. Off the top of my head, Ortiz, Gurrerro, Delahoya, and Mosley were all taller than Mayweather.

And Canelo punches hard. That was Mayweather's last fight.

Watching both come up through the JO program and open class Roger was good like many others but Ray had the potental! Ray was fast as hell and was a better all around athlete. The question for both was going to be power. When they mature will they have the ability to hurt people!
Roger was an average puncher as his opponents improved could his power match theirs as the opponents got better?
It took Ray to get to Hearns to prove he could do it. Although it was more "effort" against Tommy Ray came out knowing he had the power against other ranked talent.
The first Duran fight proved to him he could punch because he beat Duran off him more than a few times.
Pretty shamefull for Roger to say Floyd could beat Leonard. I know of no one in the business who thinks that. When talents are close to equal its the power that seperates the fighters. Floyd has none! Ray

I've never seen his brother fight. But thanks for that information. I didn't know his brother had substance abuse problems.
