  • Rank the top 10 heavyweights of the 80s

I thought this would be a fun discussion,,, rank 1-10 the best heavys of the 80s

there should be alot of good debate with this because after holmes, spinks, tyson, all the other contenders all had plus and minuses to them..

here is mine, but i might change it

    1. tyson--- best heavy and biggest impact,, holmes a better fighter and longer career but tyson from 85-89 ruled the boxing world

    2. holmes-- great champ

    3. spinks- was part of the biggest heavy fights of the decade, lineal champ

4.Witherspoon- this is where it gets interesting,, i go with tim due to overall skills

    5. pinklon- great skills but was kinda up and down,,

    6. tony tucker

    7. tony tubbs

    8. bonecrusher

    9. holyfield

    10. berbick

honestly the top 3 can be debated about the ranking of either holmes or tyson,, after spinks, its basically a free for all,,,,, Holyfield could be higher but he only spent 88-89 in the heavy division so he didnt have time to have a great run their even though he had solid wins over pink and dokes

Nice list. I might find a place for Weaver in there personally but it is a good list.

thanks,, yes i thought about weaver, cooney, bruno, dokes, biggs, there is so many to choose from that it gets hard after the top 3 guys,,,, especially when trying to get them into a ranked order,,, damn near every guy has some good wins but also horrible loses,,, and some would be in great shape, but then a year later be a fat tub of goo,,, lots of drug abuse, conflicts with don king, alot of inactivity,,, thats why i started this thread because after spinks, holmes and tyson, it gets really tricking to pick and rank guys,,,,

good list for discussion I think weaver, dokes and page could replace tubs, crusher and evander as he was really a 90's star although he started to make the transition to heavy always like page's skills. Somewhere in hear you have to mention douglas just for the Tyson win alone.

douglas was feb 90 when he beat mike, so he missed it by 2 months,,,

weaver and dokes and page are all good choices,, but i dont think i could take off tubbs,,, ---evander and crusher are replaceable though,,,

Please post your list,,, it doesnt have to be perfect, i just kinda did it off the top of my head after thinking about it last night,,,

              1. Holmes
              2. Tyson
3-10: Crackheads and/or wastes of potential.

Michael Spinks might make the top 10 as he was the only heavyweight champion in the 1980s besides Holmes and Tyson.

Great list, but drop Spinks down, or take him off altogether. Also, I would've added Coetzee in place of Berbick.Dokes and Page would've made nice additions, but in Page' case, and I'
m a big fan of his, he was too inconsistent, and the losses to Joe Bugner and Mark Wills doesn't help his case either.

The 80s had a lot of wacked out contenders, but at least it was entertaining to see them get battered.

                    1. Larry Holmes
                    2. Mike Tyson
                    3. maybe Michael Spinks..?

Holyfield was handing out KOs but he came in like what 89? Tua wasn't around yet, Mercer wasn't relevant yet, Foreman could've made the list but his big wins started in 1990. Tommy boy only has two years. Mike and Larry just dominated everyone with a short interference from Jinx Spinks.
