but he was aggressive, and isnt that the theme of the thread,, aggressive southpaws,, i think valero fits that description,,, I dont know if he is overrated or underrated, i just know that he gave morales and oscar hell in sparring and that he was an evil man that killed his wife,,

him and ike ibuebuchi are the great what-ifs in recent boxing times

Yes it is, but I just had to say it. I am just so incredibly tired of how much praise he was given and still gets.

Yep he most certainly fits that criteria. I don't know about Valero I do think he was very overrated but I do also think he looked for the knockout too much and didnt box nowhere near to his capability- I was very impressed in his fight with de marco. I heard he cheap shotted DLH in sparring (giving him the black eye) and he bet money on Pacman to KO DLH, so they chucked him
Out of camp. I also hear from a friend who trained in the tekken gym that he was a lovely family orientated man. Quite the paradox it seems....

Vassiliy Jirov comes to mind. Michael Moorer was aggressive when he was trained by Emmanuel Stewart.

Well I dont remember Moorer as an aggressive come forward southpaw. I'd say he was generally more of a standup boxer/puncher.

Maybe Moorer vs Stewart and Cooper will refresh your memory. That is how Moorer fought under Kronk and during his light heavyweight career. He was 24-0 all by KO when he entered the Heavyweight division and continued that aggressive style. His competition was poor at light heavyweight but that's beside the point.

The thread title said " aggressive". To me that does not mean constantly moving foward.

Yeah I guess its a bit about definition really. At least he was not a counterpuncher.

Looking at greeh's avatar. It delights me to see my old hero Ayub Kalule. He was a rightie who fought southpaw to emulate his brother who was a natural leftie. Kalule was not what I'd Call an aggressive fighter, but he certainly wasn't a counterpuncher.

he did have some slick moves coming forward,, he had pretty good defense when coming at a guy

Hagler was once a slick counter puncher, he became more aggressive in time, especially for certain fights. The opposite might be true of Moorer, he became more of a boxer as he needed, especially against heavyweights like Holyfield and Foreman. Pacquiao was another that at times was a boxer and other times was highly aggressive. Jirov was an good call as an aggressive southpaw.

Jose Luis Ramirez and Bazooka Limon would be considered aggressive fighters and Paul Williams seemed to prefer aggression over boxing.
