What is undisputable was that this fight caused a scandal which tarnished boxing and forever removed Liston as a heavyweight contender.
If you watch the replay it is clear he walked right into a punch that he didn't see and that it landed beautifully, really flush on the side on his jaw The way he was moving on the ground seems too convincing for him to have been faking plus as you say he did finally get up after the count when he didn't realize whether he'd been counted out yet. To me it was a false scandal.

This is the best video to show the actual punch

      Good video,,

Thats was a really weird punch,, I have never seen it that clear before,,,

I thought ali was going to shoot the right over liston's punch, but he went under like an uppercut but then turned it back down and landed flush on the jaw,,, Never seen a punch use those angles before

Surprised no one brings up the Holyfield Gold medal fiasco. He literally KO'd his opponent to a count out and got the medal taken away because the ref yelled "break" in the middle of an exchange.

Yeah, just like Don King, that ref in the Holyfield fight in the summer Olympics was a ******** or, as Butthead would say "a dirty ********". The opponent even raised Holyfield's hand because he knew it was BS and then was invited onto the podium for the medal ceremony. I wish more pro fighters would admit when they know they get a gift decision. It still counts as a win.

Easily, the biggest scandal involved the IBC, Palermo, Carbo and the 'Octopus'.

They controlled it all. The largest venues, the best fighters, the television (in it's infant stages) transmissions of the fights and contracts as well as the theatre presentations of the bouts.

The IBC makes Don King look like some messanger boy with a funny haircut.

Because boxing was easily televised it became extremely popular. During this time the IBC ran it all and when their sandalous procedures were discovered the general public basically washed their hands of the sport and it has never fully recovered. From that point on John Q. Public has always just assumed that it's all fixed in the sport of boxing.

The IBC was easily the biggest scandal in the sport............. Rockin'

You are right, they did award Jones the medal years later.

Ironic but the crooked judging in that Olympic bout caused the revamping of the scoring system in the Amateurs. It has been messed up ever since. Rather than changing the way they score fights which has not worked, they should have just ensured that there were no more crooked judges.

Good. Now they have to award the gold medals to that Olympic basketball team that got screwed out of a gold medal in their final game against Russia. It was such a bad screwjob that none of the players would even accept their silver medals.

Good call Zod....seem to remember the Kiwi fighter Kevin Barry (now a good trainer) being interviewed a few times in recent years and pretty much admitting that Holy's DQ stank like a dead shark on the beach and that he got himself a very lucky silver medal.

The amateur game is better now, but in the past it given the pro business a bloody good run for its money when it comes to slime.
