"Monkey on his back" used to be a reference to drug addiction.

Yeah it still is, while additionally being a reference to any kind of major hassle someone has, like Holmes trying to become the next heavyweight champion or when Steve Young had to follow Joe Montana as Niners QB. Young said that the monkey was off his back once he one a Super Bowl as starting quarterback.

After I had posted that I remembered the 1950's movie titled "Monkey on My Back" which was the story of Barney Ross and his addiction to Morphine.

I also recalled the Beatles classic, "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except For Me and My Monkey".

I like the story I once read about Holmes’ thunderous jab. In one of his fights, he damaged his right hand (was it against Roy Williams ’76), so for several months, he could only train with his left hand. And that is how his powerful jab developed. (Confirmation, anyone?)

There’s no excuse for not keeping up exercizing

That term refers metaphorically to any burden one has to bear, including drug addiction, or in the case of Frazier, doubt regarding the legitimacy of his title vs Ali.

Holmes v Norton 1978 a night to remember. Just so u know, it was on free network tv, abc if I remember right. Norton’s defending the belt that he finally got not by winning a title fight but cuz leon spinks signed to fight the ali rematch instead of Norton who was the mandatory via disputed points win over superslick jimmy young. Of course the ali rematch money was in the millions while the Norton fight was a few hundred grand so well there’s a simplified explanation of what happened there. Holmes had just become nationally know by beating the beloved powerhitting earnie shavers. Of course this one was a classic 15 rounder which left both completely spent at the finish. Looking back holmes was generally too fast and active for Norton but u might wonder why he didn’t jab n circle which we all seen him do so often. Story goes that as holmes had n maybe still has a bad habit of extending his left arm as though measuring a heavybag for a hook or cross, he’d done it in sparring and got hit on the elbow causing it to hyperextend and damage his bicep. so he went and gutted it out with Norton. It was the beginning of a hall of fame championship reign for holmes and really the end of Norton’s era as a top contender, he had been at that top level for 5 years in a particularly rich era of heavyweights which is damned impressive.

Somewhere in the list of great heavyweight battles, there should also be moorer v cooper, mercer v morrison, tua v izon, ibeabuchi v tua, foreman- lyle, holmes- mercer, holmes-snipes n rahman-sanders.

One last thing, I think the title of the book is, ‘’one punch from the promised land’’ its about the spinks brothers and imo its an xcellent read. The kinda read u gotta text your wife about the funny parts even tho she don’t giv a sht about boxing n is getting madder n madder everytime u tell her something funny about leon. U know? Go check it out

I am kinda surprised that no one mentioned Larrys injury earlier in the thread props to ya Cheech. Kenny fought well and Larry showed tremendous courage fighting with his injury.
