Largely, because he was'nt fazed by the hitman, his power, or his reputation.. Arguments can be made for a lucky punch in their 1st fight, but regardless of that, it meant he took a shed load of confidence into the return, and fought like a man who knew he was going to win. Tbh, Hearns had to dig very deep not to get stopped again, and struggled in the later rounds with a hideous broken nose..
What Barkley lacked in skill, he made up for with heart, strength and conditioning, but Hearns showed incredible fortitude to last the dc.

Pretty much this. Hearns couldn't hurt Barkley enough to keep him off of him. The same thing happened when Hearns fought James Kinchen. Hearns was lucky to survive in a close fight.

When Hearns moved up from welterweight he struggled with fighters who could take his power without respect and force him to fight hard. That's why Hagler fought Hearns the way he did which really was not Hagler's typical style in spite of what some people might think.

Destroyed him by winning a split decision?

A split decision that the majority of boxing insiders favored Barkley

It was a very close fight and was scored as such. Iran did some exceptional work in the fight as did Duran that's why it was 1989's fight of the year give and take, action packed.
