  • Foreman-Ali - What If

"Rumble in the Jungle" - What a fight, I've seen the documentary "When We Were Kings" several times. Such an amazing buildup and the fight itself was truly amazing.

But I have some questions, Foreman did seem to get up about when the referee had counted to nine. My first question - do you think it was the right choice to stop the fight? Foreman was up before ten and that was only the first knockdown of the fight, he hadn't been hurt that much if at all before that. Personally I do not question the stoppage at all, Foreman looked like he was done.

And secondly, if Foreman got to continue what would have happen? I just think Foreman was too tired both physically and mentally. That was his first time being dropped to the canvas to my knowledge and it was a new situation for him - being hurt. I think Ali would have danced around him popping the jab eventually dropping him again with a right.

First question is a common myth. The commentator's count was incorrect, the ref's count was way ahead already and Foreman was counted out. Lost fair and square.

If he was allowed to continue after being counted out for some inane reason then it gets very ugly for George. He was hurt badly, tired as hell and lethargic while Ali could not miss his sharp, accurate punches at that moment.

Foreman was completely out of gas. No chance of him getting lucky against someone as experienced as Ali. That fight was over.

I believe the first time Foreman was knocked down was against Ron Lyle, wasn't it?

Never mind, you're right, Lyle was Foreman's next fight after Ali, just checked so yeah, the first time Foreman was knocked down and the only time he was stopped, beaten by KO or TKO.

To my knowledge Foreman has only ever been knocked down against Ali, Lyle and Young (The Young knockdown from memory was in the last round and was a little controversial).
