Pernell Whitaker vs Oscar de la hoya

I know alot of people will say this was a poor fight but i thought it was quite an exciting tactical battle. Also the disagreements between larry merchant and Jim Lampley on the HBO coverage. Did anyone else feel that Jim was licking some serious oscar ass and talking bull. I agreed 100 percent with larry in this fight and if you add the ****** headbutt rule i actually have it draw. Considering the age difference and the fact that oscar was the puncher and the challenger for the title, whitaker was the only 1 pushing the fight and it just feels unfair that he gets such a wide unanimous loss and other bad descisions in his career.

I thought it was a sloppy mess of styles. Never watched it again after it happened.

I enjoyed it, thought it was Pernell's last great performance. Some of his defensive wizardry was incredible. It was a close fight....perhaps a draw would have been a more fair result.

I also watched it live (via tv) & never rewatched it. I didn't think it was a bad battle. I like the technical fights. Could have gone either way too.

I think it was a good fight. Oscar got the win and I can't argue with that, I think after the first 5 or 6 rounds Pernell was happy frustrating the younger, stronger, fresher fighter. I think he or someone in his corner even spoke about losing the fight during the bout, something along the lines of "if we ain't up by now, we ain't gona win". That's what I seem to remember. Anyway, this was the last time anyone saw Pernell close to his best.

It could have been a draw to me. Just imagine if the fight happened a couple years earlier before Whitaker started his decline.

Agreed; a more prime welterweight version of Whitaker surely would win this matchup.
