Despite the bizzre KO loss to Chuvalo, Quarry was clearly the better heavyweight. I saw them both fight enough times to be sure.

Scott did Quarry ever give any reason why he failed to beat the count? He clearly wasn't THAT hurt and looked like he could have gotten up anytime he wanted. It looks strange seeing him take a knee and stay there.

I uploaded it in case someone hasn't seen in a long time.

That count looked ridiculously fast to me. Watching it again makes me think Quarry thought he had more time to get up than he was given.

Whether it was his fault or the refs, Quarry definitely mistimed the count. I once saw the same thing happen to Rafael Ruelas.

Yes that certainly was a weird finish. Based on watching this fight and some others I think jerry certainly has more tools than george although george is more durable. Jerry's punching ability gave him a chance to win almost any fight he was in were george really did not have that kind of threat in his arsnel.
              Thanks for the vid.

There was a similar bout to this where the exact same thing happened. Rafael Ruelas vs. Mauro Gutierrez 1991
Gutierrez dropped the unbeaten Ruelas and Ruelas took a knee to wait out the count and didn't get up in time even though he was alright. You could see Ruelas looking over at his corner and Goossen signaling for him to stay down til the count of 8 and then signaling for him to get up at 9. Ruelas did not stand up in time. You don't want to wait til 9 to get up I guess.

This is the note on boxrec
"Ruelas, one second late with rising up after resting on one knee from a knockdown, protests vigorously against the stoppage"

Quarry was the better boxer, Chuvalo was the tougher man. And there's no shame in that. No more than a handful of heavyweights as tough as George.

On the same night that Chuvalo beat Quarry (12-12-69 - I love Boxrec)......

Randy Neumann (the famous ref) had his 4th pro fight.

Len Hutchins had the 1st blemish (a draw) of his pro career. Hutchins would go on to fight John Conteh for the LH title in the 80's.

Ruben Olivares - one of my favourite fighters - battered the British fighter Alan Rudkin. Up to that point Rudkins chin had been excellent but stood no chance against the 22 year old Mexican who was in his 55th fight (no losses).

Chucho Castillo - who would become the 1st man to beat Olivares - avenged his earlier loss against Raul Cruz.

16 year old Samuel Serrano lost the 1st bout of his 3 bout career (his other 2 bouts were against debutees). He would go on to be one of the greatest Superfeather champs in history.

On the same bill Angel Espada won recorded his 10th pro win. Espada - who later won the WBA Welter title and fought Pipino Cuevas 3 times (all KO losses) as well as a young Hearns, didn't record a win in his first 6 pro bouts. Surely a record.

Marcel Cerdan Jr, son of the all time great (guess who) recorded a win.

Juergen Blin, top European Heavyweight, who fought Ali, won that night.

Tony Mundine, father of **** Mundine, and an excellent fighter, had a comeback bout after his first loss.

And some guy named Carlos Monzon, a Middleweight from Argentina, would beat a nobody whilst in the middle of an 82 bout unbeaten run.

And this was all on a regular Friday night in December.
