Of course, Muhammad Ali had the mega-fight wins, the political drama, and the benefit of being a heavyweight. He undoubtedly was the biggest name in boxing during the 1970s. But was he the best in-ring talent of that decade?
In my opinion, looking only at 1970-1979, the real monarchs of boxing were Carlos Monzon and Roberto Duran. Ali, no doubt, compiled an outstanding resume during that time frame. But although I rank Ali ahead of both Monzon and Duran all-time, I can't do so without bringing in Ali's sensational performances in the 1960s.
So... who deserved to be Fighter of the Decade for the 1970s?
