When WWII broke out, the only legit war in the 20th century Americans shoulda been in, the nearing 50 yr old Dempsey volunteered and taught self defense to recruits and requested active duty where he served in the Pacific Theater.

Joe Louis never saw active duty, but being transferred here and there in a war zone setting for his morale boosting exhibitions was plenty hazardous enough.
