Jack Dempsey's record and stature in boxing speaks for itself. I won't agitate myself to elaborate beyond that.

Larry Holmes is a different story. As a practitioner of the sweet science in the shadow of Muhammad ali, he's probably the single most underrated fighter of all times. "The Easton Assassin" whose stiff left jab was considered one of the greatest weapons in all of sports, successfully defended his title 20 times (2nd. only to Louis' 25) and had a 65% KO ratio.

      Larry Holmes... Really!!!

I don't usually do p4p as I generally think p4p is BS. I prefer to rank fighters in a weight class and leave it that. I DID do a p4p list a few years back just playing around with it but it wasn't something I put a lot of serious thought into it.

That being said, I'm pretty comfortable with my top-5:

        01. Ray Robinson
        02. Bob Fitzsimmons
        03. Sam Langford
        04. Roberto Duran
        05. Henry Armstrong

I seem to recall that list in which you had Joe Louis in the top 5. I think you posted it in your signature.

I'm going to take Moore out of my mine and swap him with Johnson.

                Fine.

                1. Sugar Ray Robinson
                2. Joe Gans. (I'm somewhat sickened that I don't see him on other lists)
                3. Henry Armstrong
                4. Ezzard Charles
                5. Muhammad Ali
                6. Harry Greb
                7. Sam Langford
                8. Willie Pep
                9. Benny Leonard
                10. Joe Louis

Moore, Duran, and Monzon closely follow. I hate having 2 heavyweights in my list, but I do rank Louis very highly.

Now... explain how Holmes and Dempsey are greater than Charles and Langford.

Weren't you the one a few weeks ago who thought Ezzard Charles was a top 10 HW but didn't know about his LHW career?

There are several for certain weight classes, but it's hard to believe no one has addressed the P4P issue. It's tough enough to select the 10 best regardless of weight class, let alone rank 'em, but if you feel up to the task, I challenge you to do as I have below. If it's too difficult to rank them, list your top10 at any rate.
                  1. Sugar Ray Robinson
                  2. Henry Armstrong
                  3. Joe Louis

                  10. Larry Holmes
Surprising list but hey each to his own and they are ALL great fighters!
Mine would probably go like this

                  Sugar Ray Robinson
                  Henry Armstrong
                  Muhammad Ali

                  Ezzard Charles
                  Sam Langford
                  Willy Pep

Most people tend to leave Archie Moore out of their Top 10 lists.

I can't see how, he's Top 10 for me, at the very minimum.

I don't feel Joe Gans had the quality wins of other fights on the lists, his title reign was filled with people whose records were incomplete or were undeserving also, I found.
