  • If Roy Jones Learned the Fundamentals

What if Roy learned the fundamentals so he had something to fall back on when his speed left him?

Have you seen his amateur fights? He has been boxing since he was 10 years old, he knows orthodox technique. It isn't mainly lack of fundamentals that shortened his career it's lack of footwork, reflexes and chin after getting old.

Nobody starts boxing at the age of 8 by triple left hooking and wind up right hands. Roy knows the boxing game inside and out, he just milked what worked best for him as long as he could... Which for the record... Worked damn near flawlessly for 15 years and four weight classes.

        This right here^^^^^^

Heck you don't even need to see him box, listen to the man commentate on fighting and he sounds like the most intelligent commentator out there, you can tell he knows the game he's been doing it his whole life. The problem is knowing it and also having the reflexes to do it when your brain is telling you too, that's what's hurting Roy

Yeah and not being able to walk away when you're clearly past your prime is hurting Roy as well. One of the best at super middle and light heavy of all time though. Probably the best light heavy I got to see, as I didn't start watching boxing until the late '80s.

Roy would of been ****** to use a "textbook style". His style took advantage of all his abilities and thats why he's the most dominant and impressive fighter of the last 30 years(at least)

I don't know how Roy didn't know the fundamentals. I guess what you are saying is that if he had been more more conventional a la Hopkins? Then he wouldn't really be Jones, though. I'd have to say he was just fine the way he was...
