You do realize that he grew up in Canada, started out boxing in CANADA, even tried to make the CANADIAN Olympic team for boxing right???? He was a member of the Canadian National team as well...LOL!

I f you think he isn't a Canadian fighter, you are in the VAST MINORITY my man..lOL!!!

One final question, where do most of his family reside if he wasn't a Canadian?

I find it somewhat insulting for you or anyone else to TRY and say he wasn't a Canadian! He most certainly was, and was proud of it, and so are his family that STILL live in Montreal to this day!!!!!!!!!
All I did was present facts. Sorry if you feel insulted.

Scott, although I wouldn’t use masterOdisaster’s tone (I don’t think I’d use it with anybody… -come on, buddy!), I’m afraid I basically agree with him. The Gatti, Joe and Arturo, were both proud Montrealers, they were close members of the Montreal boxing community. Both spoke English and French, like most Montrealers, aside from their mother tongue, Italian. Arturo came back to Montreal and often gave interviews to the media, here, during his career. He dreamt of fighting in Montreal for a long time before having the opportunity to do so. He was from a little part of south-west Montreal called Ville-Émard and was always proud of his origins. I can’t understand how I could have forgotten Arturo. It’s beyond me… We loved him so much here in Montreal! Big mistake on my part.
The OP, rightsideup, also reminded me of a good lightweight from Edmonton, Al Ford, who accumulated a record of 37-0 before losing a split decision to Percy Hayles for the Commonwealth Title, then won a few more times and lost to Ken Buchanan in London in 1979. A good, solid fighter.
A good boxing story about Laurent Dauthuile, whom I mentioned before, an old timer told me, is that he arrived in Montreal with nothing, not a cent in his pockets. When he started to train, he was so poor they arranged for him to live right in the legendary Montreal forum. He was living in there, in some corner, under pipes and ducts, steel beams and what have you, sleeping on a camp bed. He came so close from taking a special place in boxing history that night of September 1950, in Olympia Stadium in Detroit, against Jake LaMotta. He was way ahead on all score cards. At the end of the 15th round, LaMotta knew his tittle was lost. So he acted hurt for a complete minute and Dauthuile bit: he hammered LaMotta with everything he had until he could hardly raise his arms anymore. Then, with about 20 seconds left in the fight, LaMotta proceed to knock him out. I think the KO came at 3 or 4 seconds of the final bell, and LaMotta retained the Middleweight crown…

My tone, really???? I didn't insult the poster by calling him any names or questioning his intelligence did I?

If you took it as an insulting post, then I apologize as it wasn't intended to be. Just wanted to show how loved Gatti was AND still IS here in Canada, especially in the City where he grew up and loved, Montreal.

MasterOdisaster, I'm wholeheartedly with you in that love for Aturo! We've had that wonderful opportunity to say that the most exciting fighter in the game was coming from our city. And I'll say this once again, you were absolutly right to remind me! Thanks!

Besides Gatti also pumped tons of money into Canada by developing and building in Montreal.
