  • Best fights of 1989

Duran/Barkley got FOTY, but, although it was good, I have a hard time believing a decade as good as the 80s didn't have fights that were better than this in 1989.

    Any candidates?

Good fight, but again, in a good year that would be nearer the bottom end of the spectrum. Their second fight, though, was a bonafide barn-burner. Very rare that the second fight in the trilogy is the best.

I thought Leonard vs Hearns 2 got fight of the year 1989. Might have been Ring Magazine.

Either way, I thought it was better than Duran vs Barkley.

Holyfield-Dokes was the best fight that year. To choose Duran-Barkley (which was also a great fight) over it you have factor in the drama involved.

McCallum vs Graham in 1989 I think was a great fight too, but Holyfield-Dokes was the best fight that year.

The first Jeff Harding-Dennis Andries fight was an incredible fight.

An overlooked lil' gem from that year was Lupe Guitierrrez vs Jeff Franklin underneath Camacho-Mancini.

Duran-Barkley was a great and dramatic fight, but I find myself watching Holyfield vs Dokes quite often....not the case with Duran-Barkley.
