  • Robinson vs Tunney

I was reading something a couple of days ago comparing Greb and Robinson and it got me wondering how Ray would have fared in a 15 round fight with Tunney at 175. Any opinions or analysis on this one?

Hard one to call, I think prime MW SRR is in with a near even shout though. He'd have to play ambush puncher here which he could do. Cover his way inside and try and land HARD then get away before Tunney times him coming in and clinches. I honestly think peak Ray Robinson could pull it off but it's just as likely he struggles to get into Tunney without being countered and then clinched by the bigger man.

If Robinson had fought Burley, we'd probably have a better idea how this one would go.

      What a damn fascinating match-up.

My gut instinct is to choose the bigger, superbly skilled man in Gene Tunney. Greb's win(s) over him are regarded as they are for a reason. Robinson could completely bewilder opponents, but he was much more selective and didnt possess the whirlwind, non-stop attack of Harry although he was exceptionally more powerful, even at Middleweight. Tunney had an incredible ring IQ, fine jab, great footwork. It's a stretch to envision Robinson outboxing Gene Tunney; he'll need to be in attack mode most of the time as Barn stated and rely heavily on his speed and reflexes. It's definitely conceivable for Robinson to hurt him and land the more meaningful shots, but I can't give it more than 50/50.

It would be interesting to see how Tunney would do with the speed and skills of Robinson. Robinson was not a big middleweight so Tunney's size would be a problem. Ray would have a better chance in my opinion if it were a ten round bout.

Tunney would definitely be a stone heavier-at least! Just too big for Sugar. Clear points win for Tunney.

Robinson would need the larger ring Tunney requested against Dempsey.

Well, no way i can see Ray winning this one, Tunney too big in this one. Maybe on another night and a cooler stadium Ray beats Maxim (who really was a superb boxer btw),,,, but I cant ever see Joey Maxim beating Tunney,,, I think this is a very bad match up, as bad a match up as a Robinson V Pacquiao bout would be for Manny.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Of course I rate Ray higher than Tunney but I see Gene knocking Ray out at around the 12th or 13th. Tunney at 175 is fast, strong, rock hard and capable of some real power, I don't see a weakness that Ray can exploit apart from having a speed advantage, we are talking about two of the smartest fighters to ever pull on a glove, Ray could outthink nearly any fighter, he may run into an equal in that department with Gene Tunney.... yes it's Tunney via stoppage after 6 or 7 torrid brilliant early rounds and 5 or 6 more of increasingly torrid and unhappy rounds for Ray......................... in boxing, its very hard to argue with BIG.

Tunney...simply much bigger..Ray had the skills and the speed...but Tunney was himself a very good boxer and fast enough...I think he hurts Ray and takes an unanimous decision.

You have a talent for saying what I said in a quarter of the words and half the effort,, basically I totally agree.

As amazing as Robinson was, I would pick Tunney to soundly beat him at LHW. Equally skilled and the size difference should make up for the huge gap in (p4p) power. This one would be a textbook fight though, that's for sure.
