Thank you for all your kind words. This site and the people he talked to on here enriched my Grandfather's life the last few years. He had been married 50 years when my Nan died and we could tell he was lonely and at a bit of a loose end. So my father bought him a computer to give him an interest and my job was to teach him how to use it. As you probably discovered he wasn't a natural lol. Btw he made me write down things like lol and what it meant. My aunt had to teach him how to cook so I guess I got off light.
I also looked around for things that might interest him and joined him to this site. He absolutely loved it right from the start. It fascinated him that he could talk to people across the world and that a 70 year old could mix with 20 year olds, "you wouldn't see that in a pub would you?"
He loved the fact he could wake up at 4AM and talk to people on here.
He was also a demon at online poker, "tops the pension up a bit"
Reading this thread I am happy that his personality came across on the site he would have been embarassed by the thread of course. "I just wanted you to explain why I wasn't replying to people not to cause a fuss" he will be thinking no doubt.
He was a very courteous man and liked to exchange views but would hate to offend anyone, except rude people and racists of course!
He was very touched by the help he received on the site, I had to patiently let him explain to me how to cut and paste. "It will be handy for you to know this"
Since he has died so many people have been in touch with their memories of him and I've learnt a lot about him I didn't know.
He had quite a poor upbringing and worked on the docks for years. He hadn't had much education but pretty much educated himself by reading. He was very proud that 3 of his children went to university. He would have been pleased to have been called classy as boxers who carried themselves with class always were favourites of his
Whenever I visited him I'd notice boxing books piled up by the computer with notes in them and the magnifying glass he used to read the screen. He could never find his glasses and I long ago gave up showing him how to zoom in.
He had a lot of health issues over the last year and I think over the last few months he realised that he wasn't going to last much longer and he made a point out of visiting all the family and saying what I now realise was his goodbyes.
He would be pleased that I have said his goodbyes to his friends on here.
A number of you have sent private messages which has been lovely and I will reply to you in the coming days.
John
