  • Incompetent referees.

Now we all know that Joe Cortez is senile.... but he's far from the only guy who has looked ****** officiating. At least he made a correct ruling.

Anyway the clip below features a referee who's has no idea what he is doing. Check out this dramatic foulfest:

Now about the ****** referee (Paul Sita) giving a 20 count.... A 20 count is given if a fighter gets knocked out of the ring as far as I know. If down following a lowblow the fighter gets up to 5 minutes to recover.

As for Michael Buffer's announcement I'm truely puzzled. "The fighter must make an attempt at getting up before the count of ten regardless of the blow delivered .... " And then Gainer gets a win by TKO.

Gainer did try to get up before ten. Why not explain why a 20 count was administered???

The only good thing here is that they found the correct winner as Norwood should have been DQ'ed way before the fight ended.

Another fight that comes to my mind when speaking about referee incompetence is the second fight between Ali and Liston. The one with the famous phantom punch. The referee in that fight was former HW champion Jersey Joe Walcott.

Liston goes down and gets a twenty second ten count by Walcott who's busy trying to direct a jubilant Ali to a neutral corner. As he wipes off Liston's gloves the Ring Magazine founder Nat Fleischer shouts at Walcott that Liston did not beat the count. Walcott cant hear shit and crosses the ring towards Fleischer before stopping the contest.

The fight is always worth a look if nothing else then just to watch a prime Ali. Was there ever a more fluid and graceful boxer to step into the ring?

VIC PATRICK was an awesome fighter, but as a referee he was VERY Ordinary..... check out some of his gaffes./// like not stopping the Rose V Gattelari fight, Loinel nearly killed Rocky in that fight and the fallout from the storm it created when the press saw Gattelari in a complete mess in hospital the next day....... Gattelari was a zombie for the last 5 rounds until the terrible K.O......... Vic Patrick's response was along the lines of, "They don't make them like me or Freddie Dawson anymore,...... we'd rather die than quit.....", you know, that kind of thing....... but I have a feeling he was right on the "Tough" part. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Patrick was a terror in the ring, and one of the best southpaws to ever live,.. Patrick was a ring marvel.

        Incompetent referee.

Swatting Mendones' arm from clinching Pacquiao starting at 5:28.

Pushing Mendones' head forward staring at 5:31.

The referee holding the ring's rope to prevent a fighter from exiting the ring.

        Just sloppy officiating.

Here we have Timothy Bradley vs. Nate Campbell. Campbell takes a nasty headbutt that opens a cut which ultimately causes the fight to be stopped.

Bradley gets a TKO win by a referee who doesn't know what he's doing. Fortunately the verdict gets overturned by the commision and today it's rightfully a no-decision.

None worse in my lifetime than Alfredo Asaro in the Benn-McClellan fight.

Yeah. Another category of lame officiating is the home-town referees. History is littered with examples of 'neutral' third men giving the home-fighter all the advantages. I don't think your example was that bad though.

Check out this fight. It's Lucian Bute - Librado Andrade I. Bute is the home fighter and is leading big on the scorecards going into the 12th and final round. Here Bute gets a hammering and is wobbling around like a spastic after consuming a bottle of vodka.

The referee gives Bute all the advantages. He separates the fighters despite them still punching and while breaking away he obstructs Andrade to buy Bute time (0.30). Some neutral referees would have saved Bute from further punishment, but this guy allows them to continue. Bute then goes down hard and the referee laughably directs Andrade to a neutral corner while giving Bute an 8 count that takes 20 seconds.

I was revolted at the ref in the Robin Reid vs Sven Otke fight.

The ref who was involved in the Jones Jnr vs Bryant Brannon fight, was hopelessly late at stopping the massacre.

I hate to say it because he was such a great referee and regarded as one of the best but Ruby Goldstein was the first I thought of because of Emile Griffith - Benny Paret III.
Needless to say he was never before that though.

                  Ross Strada, the Kabary Salem - Randie Carver fight is etched into my head because of what happened. Salem got away with whatever he pleased that night and it's Strada's fault. When questioned on it he said;
"I could tell something was wrong"
"I didn't let it happen, it just happened, it's boxing"
1 point was deducted after the first headbutt in round 1 but none after that, in the ninth Strada asked Carver's corner if they wanted to stop the fight because Carver "Just didn't look right" and Joe Brown answered
"No, we're not going to stop a fight we're winning"
Start of the 10th Carver drops to the ground, in horrible shape and tries to get up 3 times falling each before Strada stopped it.

The fight should of ended in DQ way before even the 4th round.

Another example of a homer referee is here below. You should allow yourself to watch the whole fight as it is quite entertaining, but if you are only interested in seeing the actions of a hometown referee in his near prime you can go to 7.00 to see a referee help home fighter Yoan Pablo Hernandez stand up after being KD'ed hard.
