I've noticed that good chins generally seem to fall into two categories, stocky no neck guys with big square heads, and spindly limber guys with elastic necks. The former take the punches and just absorb them into the muscles around their neck and shoulders. The latter dissipate the energy of the punch by being so relaxed that the brain's impact is softened. Andrade, McCullough, Margarito and Naz would be good examples of this latter. Naz especially, often looked like his neck was being broken in some of the pics caught at the moment of impact. I've also noticed that a lot of fighters with big heads relative to their body size tend to be able to take a good punch. Whether there's a physical reason for this or if it's just a coincidence I don't know.Comment

Juan Roldan, whom he fought, had an even weirder build. Enormous upper body and barrel chest, and spindly little legs. Could take a good punch as well.Comment

I've recently begun to question the old adage "You can't build muscles on a chin." Whilst that still holds true, you can build muscles around the chin, and a thick neck and traps can't really hurt your ability to take a shot if you're already of the stocky disposition, or a fighter who naturally tenses up when you get hit. Very few shots ever land exactly on the sweet spot anyway, so anything which can increase stability and further cushion the head against impacts has got to be beneficial.Comment

A thick strong neck definitely stabilizes the vertebrates preventing nerve pinching. Samuel Peter comes to mind...he walks forward through punches unaffected...with the exception of Klitschko where he was just to small to get close enough to be only at the receiving end.Comment

Peter seems to be able to take straight right hands like they're nothing. There's a montage clip somewhere of his first fight with Wlad where he just eats right hand after right without visible effect. Uppercuts and hooks though tend to knock him loopy. Certain builds certainly have their strengths and weaknesses.Comment
