  • Why did Hopkins duck Harry Simon?

I have read an interview with Simon where he claimed he was ready and willing to fight Hopkins, back in 2004. But then a year later he went to jail. He also said however that he had offered Hopkins the fight but Hopkins wasn't interested. He was approached 3 times by Simon's manager but each time made up an excuse.

You can find the article on google. Its on the FORBIDDEN site. ESB.

Simon had no credibility or name value at 160. Hopkins owed him nothing.

Past, in your mind I'm sure you believe its because Bhop is another American media creation who really can't fight not that Simon was barely known and brought zero marketability to this fight

None of the TV netwoks wanted to show Hopkins-Hakkar, but Jay Larkin agreed to show it if Hopkins agreed to fight calzaghe and Simon. Hopkins turned the offer down

Since dumping DiBella, Hopkins has had only one fight (against Carl Daniels on February 2nd of this year). His next bout is tentatively scheduled for January 11th against Morrade Hakker at the First Union Center in Philadelphia. Don King won the right to promote the bout with a purse bid of $1,501,000. Hopkins's announced share of that total will be $1,125,750, although there are rumors that he made a side-deal with King to ensure DKP winning the purse bid that will reduce his take to $750,000. There are also persistent rumors that the fight won't take place at all. Both HBO and Showtime have declined to televise it, and King might be reluctant to promote a pay-per-view bout on the same night as a free National Football League playoff game.
Meanwhile, Hopkins has turned down an offer of $6,000,000 plus a percentage of profits to fight Roy Jones on HBO Pay-Per-View and a three fight multimillion-dollar package from Showtime for bouts against Hakkar, Joe Calzaghe, and Harry Simon. That led King to declare recently, "Bernard Hopkins is like a man who won the lottery and then waited to cash his ticket until after it expired."

A guy who was going to go to jail for causing the death of three people was not the most marketable opponent at the time. I'm not saying Hakker was either, but you have to blame the WBC partly for that.

As a general rule mandatories tend to be sub-par. For a champion to find a top opponent they have to fight the other champions in their division or adjacent divisions.

Another example of you talking out of your ass. There was never any Showtime proposal for Hopkins to fight Simon or Calzaghe.
