In that fight one judge had Mauriello winning 10-5... but was overruled by the other 2, who scored it for the defending champ 8-7 and 8-6-1, respectively.

In other words; if world title fights weren't decided by 3 individual scores, but by the TOTAL number of rounds awarded by the 3 judges, then Mauriello would have won with a score of 23-21-1, and would today be known as the youngest (17Y,11M,8D) ever world champion in one of the 8 classic divisions... and the 2nd youngest overall (behind Benitez)!
that actually is very interesting trivia, thank you for sharing.

now Im interested in seeing that fight.

According to his "Title Bout" fighter card bio...

"Contender during the middle 40's. Lost a title fight to Joe Louis and never received another shot although he was a contender for a number of years. A plodding slugger, Mauriello hit hard if not often, but took too many punches himself to get the job done."
