Who has heard of this guy? Great puncher he was, not a great boxer but certainly had tons of heart. Everyone says he was a heck of a nice guy too. He knocked out Lou Nova twice, the same Lou Nova that gave Max Baer the worst beating of his life and stopped him twice. He actually ended Nova's career, koed him in 1 round the second time. 60 kos in 82 wins! Back then it was really a huge ko percentage. Still is rather big. He started boxing pro at 15! First as a ww, then mw, lhw and finally hw, where he made most noise. He was known as a tough warrior and had a short but very exciting fight with Joe Louis where he hurt Louis first before getting koed. Also koed the 25-0 Bruce Wood**** and beat Lee Savold. Lost 2 close decisions to Jimmy Bivins. Gus Lesnevich had his number, beat him 4 times.

He appeared in "On the Waterfront", the Marlon Brando flick. I've seen it three times.

All I knew about him before your info was that I'd seen him fight Louis, so thanks for adding that, as for fighter Bio's,. they are hard to track down.

      Interesting bit of Mauriello trivia:

When he lost a split decision to Gus Lesnevich in a challenge for the light heavyweight crown back in 1941, he was not yet 18 years old.

In that fight one judge had Mauriello winning 10-5... but was overruled by the other 2, who scored it for the defending champ 8-7 and 8-6-1, respectively.

In other words; if world title fights weren't decided by 3 individual scores, but by the TOTAL number of rounds awarded by the 3 judges, then Mauriello would have won with a score of 23-21-1, and would today be known as the youngest (17Y,11M,8D) ever world champion in one of the 8 classic divisions... and the 2nd youngest overall (behind Benitez)!

Hm, thats interesting. Defending champions always got the nod in close fights. Shame indeed.

He also beat lee Oma one of the better boxers of the period.

I remember reading he had a bad right heel and hence had problem moving back, so he always tried to bomb his opponent out early.

Killed or be killed. Worked for him most of the time though. He was one tough guy.

I remember a couple of years ago, when you explained why he means something special to you. I liked that story... in fact, every time I come across Baksi, I can't help thinking of that.
