I liked the articles on KO but preferred the fight coverage from Boxing Illustrated(&International boxing Digest). I subscribed to Ring, KO, World Boxing, and Internat. Box. Digest. I started subscribing in the late seventies and did so until about 2004 when the internet took off.

As Scott pointed out, fight coverage ran a couple months behind in the magazines and was the worse part of it.

I still have all my magazines by the way.

I remember them,, I always looked for ko, ring, and pwi when I was near a magazine stand in a store....
Also always looked into sports illustrated because they used to have great boxing coverage each month.

I remember a magazine that did half boxing and half pro wrestling. What was that named?

When I first started reading magazines, they had Boxing Illustrated / Wrestling Revue. What it really offered was about 90% boxing with some wrestling features at the tail end of the magazine.

And KO Magazine was definitely my favorite.

            KO magazines

I used to go to the Ring office in NYC and buy yearly bound volumes
Of Ring from the Feb issue thru the following Jan issue.

If I recall, the circulation manager was Janet Chase.
Those were the good old days!

Before internet, you were dependent on several boxing magazines to be updated, and in the 1970s-80s I remember subscribing to at least 10 or more mags.

World Boxing & International Boxing and their ‘progeny’ Big Book of Boxing, and later KO Magazine, became first to rank Larry Holmes above Muhammad Ali when the latter was still recognized as the world champ. That was in 1979, and it caused a storm among the readers at the time.

Boxing Illustrated under Lew Eskin’s control, Hank Kaplan’s Boxing Digest, Flash Gordon’s Tonight's Boxing Program and Weekly Newsletter etc., they all contributed to fill us in.

              • The most dignified back then was Bert Sugar’s The Ring. Its war against WBC and WBA leading to The Ring being barred at some events was a result of non-hypocritical journalism. Too bad, though, that Sugar was too much a journalist and less money-minded, as the mag apparently lost a fortune every month during his reign.

              • And the most important back then was the British weekly Boxing News – the 1970s version of internet.

And thankfully the magazine is still going strong today. I try to pick it up whenever I can

Any chance of KO mag getting republished? With all the top bill fights materializing this year, this may be high time for a comeback.

                      The internet sunk that ship.

Hard to get fans to pay 6-8 dollars a month for news and stories when it is free and online.
