Being he was out for four years, I don't think it was very wise to not put him with a great trainer from the outset. They had given him four easy fights before facing an Evander Holyfield who was well-oiled in having a tough fight with Ray Mercer and some good rounds against Bobby Czyz. Then after another stint of inactivity, put him in a bunch of easy fights and then Lennox Lewis for the title. Compare that to the master management of the Jacobs/Cayton team in the first part of his career. It seems as though the Tyson project post-prison was more about making money than him having a successful career. I just had to get that off my chest.

I believe he was mis-managed post-prison as well...Had he kept Kevin Rooney, or another trainer of that caliber, Mike would've been just fine in the latter years of his career. -

Maybe the massive funds he was paid to fight a bunch of terrified mediocrities (aside from Holyfield) were mis-managed by someone in his life, but from a boxing persepctive...the bolded part of my sentence says he was INCREDIBLY MANAGED.
Anyway, almost everyone thought Holyfield was going to be destroyed that first fight. Let's not pretend otherwise in hindsight. Evander was coming off a KO loss to Bowe, and an absurd struggle with a fat Bobby Czyz.Comment
