Who could beat Roy Jones at middleweight and light-heavyweight?

Roy Jones is one of the fastest fighters of all time (arguable, THE), however, any trainer worth his salt will tell you that there is one surefire way to negate speed. Timing. Ezzard Charles had an iron chin, Sharp Technique, very good speed of his own, underrated power (especially before the baroudi incident) great stamina and excellent Timing. All of his punches were strong fast and accurate and threw combos like no ones business. I would favor Charles over almost anyone at LHW.
Same with Monzon.
Marvin HAgler also had all these attributes but the fact that he can box very well with both stances help him out even more.

I like Jones. He was a top fighter with tremendous natural ability, a great attitude and an entertaining style. He is also very knowledgeable about the sport and wonderfully articulate.
That said, I do think he attracts some of the worst nuthugging I've seen in boxing forums.
Spend even a minute or two reading their comments and you'd swear Jones was some kind of adamantium-alloyed terminator with the reflexes of a spider monkey, the power of an earth mover and a chin hewn from Mount Rushmore.
Reality check: Roy was a great fighter. But he was not superman.

I think great MW's like Hagler, Monzon, SRR, Burley would beat a still somewhat green Roy Jones at MW. Ezzard Charles who like Roy -even though both were very good fighters at 160- was not yet prime or barely hitting his prime while out growing the division quickly could have beaten Roy as well.
Is not really fair IMO to match Roy against the greats at 160 who -take away Charles(who was not yet prime) and SRR(who was past prime)- every great MW was at their best, peak at MW. While Roy was still not in his prime or peak years.
At 175 I would pick Ezzard Charles again(IMO the greatest LHW of all time), Michael Spinks, and Bob Foster(I think he catches Roy and puts his lights out) beats Roy.
I think even a more recent fighter like Antonio Tarver would have given a prime Roy hell. He just had the perfect style, stance, timing, skill set, counter punching ability, height, length to just frustrate even a prime sensational Roy.
The one thing that I didn't like about Roy. Was that he didn't stay at 168 for long. No fighter is unbeatable. But, to me Roy(like SRR at 147) at 168 was the closest thing to unbeatable as you can get. IMO in that weight-class he had the best combination of speed, power, size, strength to beat damn near everyone.
And, one final comment. I saw that Greb was mentioned. Now IMO Greb has a case to being the GOAT. Yes even ahead of SRR. And, IMO Greb is thee GOAT at MW. And, that's because I go by resume and accomplishments. But, I think it's very difficult to pick him in any fashion in a fantasy H2H match up. Besides a friendly sparring, and training routine there is no actual fighting footage of him. Yes I know he by all accounts he had a swarming buzzsaw type of style. But, we don't really know what his strength and weaknesses are. We can't really breakdown how a fight between him against so and so will go. Now IMO I think he was a beast. Because, there a footage of skilled fighters he beat like Tunney. And, for him to beat the likes of Tunney, Loughran, Gibbons brothers, Walker, Rosenbloom, etc etc and do it with just one eye tells me that he was a beasty fighter. However, what kind of a beast? I don't know. There just no footage for me to guage him on.
This maybe an unpopular opinion. But, I don't think Greb should ever be mentioned in a fantasy H2H match up. matter of fact I'm about to put this in the unpopular opinion thread.Last edited by jrosales13; 07-18-2011, 01:46 AM.
