  • Worst beatings

What is the biggest beating ever taken by a fighter, in a fight that went the distance? I'm not talking about guys getting blown away and getting KTFO, but about guys taking a beating from the 1st bell to the last, but still, somehow, making it 'til the end.

I find it hard to see past the 15 round beating that Randall "Tex" Cobb takes against Larry Holmes. I re-watched it recently and it's still breath-taking viewing. At the end I still think "how the *** he is still standing!?"

A good recent example would be Vitali-Briggs from last year when Briggs was essentially a human punchbag for 12 rounds, but still managed to last the distance. I actually only just got round to watching that fight, it's actually what inspired this thread!

Calzaghe's pasting of lacy was a pretty good 12 round beating.

      • Henry Armstrong vs Barney Ross
      • Joe Calzaghe vs Jeff Lacy
      • Muhammad Ali vs Ernie Terrel
      • Julio Cesar Chavez vs Hector Camacho
      • Billy Collins Jr vs Luis Resto

Just a few and my pick would be Collins taking a murderous beating at the loaded hands of Resto. He showed tremendous courage taking such a terrible pounding, not sure how he managed to last 10 rounds.

I found Scott Harrison vs Wayne McCullough pretty uncomfortable to watch.

I'll think of a few better examples later....

Yep, it's one of my favourite beatings of all time.

It's not often you leave a Calzaghe fight surprised there wasn't a knockout!

Armstrong-Ross is a good shout. Ross said he had no legs after the third round and Henry was giving him a terrible beating. His corner wanted to stop it but Ross would have no part of that insisting he would go out like a champion.

I thought of menetioning Ali-Terrel but I didn't think it was a 15 round beatdown as such.

Early on Ali, is in charge but Terrel's footwork is pretty good and kept him in the fight, and out of trouble at times. The second half of the fight turned into a beatdown. Even then Ali wasn't going all out for a KO, he was having too much fun humiliating his opponent.

it would take some searching for me to nominate the single most atrocious beating

i'll nominate some brutal ones though from recent memory
williams - lara (they should have just stole lara's shoes if they were going to rob him like that. williams took a savage beating.)
margarito - pacquiao (tony is still wearing sunglasses to this day. his vision will likely never be the same. that fight should have been stopped in the 8th or 9th round)
                  andrade - kessler
                  calzaghe - lacey

cotto could have finished against pacquiao more than likely
and that was a brutal beating. thats another one that should have been stopped by the fighter's corner, if not the ref or the doctor

will add to the list later as some fights// beatings come to mind that actually went the distance

George Foreman-Alex Stewart. This fight is seldom mentioned but it's a great hw battle and one of the worst beatings I've seen in my life. Foreman gets peppered repeatedly with crisp hard shots from Alex Stewart his face turns into a bloody mask and George is almost unrecognizable by the end of the fight....
