He would have turned 63 in June...

R.I.P to a very underrated fighter.

I also thought he was older than that.

Yeah, a sad day here in Aus. He was a true champ in every sense of the word. Hardly a brawler though....in fact he was about as close to being a brawler as Mayweather is. Highly skilled boxer, counter puncher. Fought entirely off the jab. Amazing fighter.

Maybe time to come with an ALL-TIME ABORIGINAL TOP 10

I suggest buying the book on him "The Onion Picker", very good read and supplies information on other boxers at the time.

                Also he had some guts.
I was saddened to hear about poor Lionel pasasing away, he was a very correct and talented champion. I think he was almost as good as Dave Sands and in the Top 2 all-time Austalian Aboriginal boxers. How many very good Aboriginal fighters can you name ? Here is my top 10 with only the top 2 numbered, the rest of you can pick your own order. No. 1 Dave SANDS,. 2. Lionel ROSE,. . ,.. Jerry JEROME,... Ron RICHARDS,.. Jack HASSEN,.. Charlie BRACKEN,. . ,. TONY MUNDINE Snr.,... Hector THOMPSON,.. Alfie SANDS,... No 10,.... Anthony MUNDINE Jnr,.. ( young Anthony is lucky to be mentioned amongst this company, there is no way that he was in his fathers class, but he did better than I ever thought possible. ).
