  • Larry Holmes vs Ray Mercer

I thought this was a very impressive performance by Holmes, considering most thought his career was definitely over after being mauled by Tyson and being about 42 or 43.

especially considering he dealt with Mercer easier than a near prime Lennox Lewis. quite a statement, imo.

your thoughts on his performance? and also how he did against Holyfield and McCall while were at it.

Styles make fights and I remember picking Holmes based on his. Remember, both Damiani and Morrison were out boxing Mercer till getting caught with big shots. If you slugged with Ray you could be had. If you boxed him though and didn't get caught........see this fight.

Can you belive the WBO wound't saction this fight, due to concerns of Holmes's well being?

Shame Holmes would of been HW chamo at 42.

He wouldn't have been a recognized champ, but that isn't the point and I know what you're saying.

ho knows why any of the alphabet orgs do what they do. You gotta remember, this is a group who once had a dead man ranked in their top ten. Not exactly the brightest bunch!

Mercer usually struggled with clever boxers, but I never expected Holmes to school him like that. An excellent performance by Holmes that cost Mercer a sure title shot against Holyfield.

Holmes was really one hell of a boxer. Its results like this that give merit to Tysons desimation of him. Obviously past his best but still a good fighter

I was expecting Sonny to bring this up, but it looks like you beat him too it, lol. I'd call Lennox prime there at 30, though he had been with Steward less than 2 years at that point. Would've liked to see a rematch. Worth mentioning too that Ray was undefeated when he fought comes, coming off a loss when he fought Lennox.

Whats the story behind them having a dead man ranked?

A few years ago the WBO ranked someone who had been dead for several months.
