People don't realize how little Duran actually fought at lightweight. After the Buchanan fight he literally only ever dropped down for title fights, the majority of his bouts were catchweight in the 140 range. Very similar to what Mosley would do.

By all means Duran is unquestionably one of the fighters of the 70's and what he did in the 70's was incredible I just believe he was in Ali's shadow throughout that period.
Personally I can't give the 70's to anyone but Ali to think what he did in that 10 year period is absolutely astonishing IMO.
I most definitely prefer Duran to Ali but for me the 70's is Ali's decade.
Agreed. The three fights with Frazier and one with Foreman trumps ANY other fighter during the 70's. Ali coming back after almost 4 years and jumping right in against dangerous fighters like Quarry and Bonevena is unheard of today. When Tyson came back he fought Peter McNeely and Buster Mathis jr.

Monzon had his entire title reign in the 70s. I think hes very much in the discussion.
If the Leonard bout was in the 70s, then Duran would have been the most accomplished fighter of 70s imo.
shout outs to Foster and Napoles, although theyre probably not the best of the 70s.
oh, but the obviou choice of course is Ali

lots of guys did that in the past
for one, he was many times as active as a champion these days
top tier fighters fight twice, maybe three times a year today.
very rarely will you find a world champion these days who is wiling to fight four or more times a year
if he did he'd likely fight at higher weights than championship form, where he's got extra time to shed weight to make the limit for said belt
