I think it's pretty well known by now that Basillio really didn't like him,but why? I haven't watched it in a long time, but he wasn't very complimentary(huge understatement) towards Robinson in that documentary.

and What doc? I remember in he Carmen doc he talked about how he went up to Ray to introduce himself before they had ever fought while Carmen was with his wife and Ray barley even aknowledged him, leaving Basillio to feel insulted. He said from that point on he was determined to lay a beating on Ray.Last edited by Mikhnienko; 02-20-2011, 02:26 AM. -
Robinson beat his wife into having 5 miscarrages. Who the hell would like that coward outside the ring?

I don't recall the exact name of this documentary,it was one that hbo did on Robinson over a decade ago.
Certainly a rude gesture, but seems something rather trivial to hold a grudge over for such a long time.Comment

Well as for hating him at the time due to feeling like he disrespected him infront of his wife, more than legitimate. As for "holding a grudge" all these years he probably just doesn't like him as a person, some people rub you the wrong way.Comment

That's the name.It was one of the first boxing documentaries that I ever watched.Probably the best I've ever seen too.Comment

Can't believe no one has mentioned the financial element of this. Basilio's dislike for Robinson, born with their outer-ring meeting before they had ever fought, transformed into a raging contempt when the two argued endlessly over Robinson's at-times outrageous attempts at lopsided purse splits, gate-takings, & other methods Basilio felt were being thrown about to rob him of his share of the proceeds.
Robinson was infamously ruthless in negotiation (You can be damn sure if they shared an era, the two Sugar Ray's would never have made it past the negotiating table, no matter how desperately the public & networks clamoured for a fight). Gene Fullmer had the same problems, & resulting disgust, for Robinson.Comment

As unbelieveably amazing as Ray Robinson was, it seems he really wasn't liked, at all.
He seemed very arrogant and what alot of people don't know is he also stated that he didn't care about his legacy and was only involved in boxing for the money.
If thats the case its clear the big money fights were the ultimately the best fighters back then.Comment
