  • How has your opinion of fighters changed after your time on this forum?

For example. I used to think that Muhammad Ali was the G.O.A.T HW but, after learning more about Louis' achievements I nudged him up to no1.

    Any others?

    Good question my friend!...

With the current crop of excellent posters there are now on this section, i tend to spend a lot more time reading than i do responding and tbh, there's becoming less and less to disagree with..

It goes without saying, that Jab is doing an excellent job of moderating the junk and keeping it all within the facts.. And yes, my opinion has changed on several fighters since i joined this forum. It's about being woken up to certain facts and not being afraid to say you've been mistaken. You can't come on here anymore after a few beers and get away with any careless mistakes, because you'll get pulled up.. Imo it really is a premier league of part time writers, well versed in the subject of boxing history.

When i first joined, i had unfounded opinions like LaMotta was a devastating puncher, Liston was just a brawler and Trinidad was the best welter whoever lived. Well thanks to a lot of you guys, my knowledge on several aspects of the game have picked up considerably.. Everyone knows something you don't, and i like to think that's why we all come on here..

I have learned a lot about the lower weights pre 90s. I wish some didn't have the older=better mentality or else I could learn a lot more

I used to think that Once you get below HW all the other fighters ******. When I got a computer I found more fights and talked to older guys at my gym for information which has made me well versed in not really boxing history, but more boxing analysis. But I can analyze a fighter along other fighters and determine their place in history according to my research and opinions.

After I joined this forum, I was able to better analyze a fighter and I learned about new fighters that changed my thinking completely.

When I was a young boy, at about 7 I had George Foreman as the HW GOAT.
As a teenager i added Tyson at number two.

After more time at the gym I had my list at
        1. Louis
        2. Foreman
        3.Ali
        4. Holmes
        5. Marciano
        6. Holyfield
        7. Walcott
        8. Patterson
        9. Bowe
        10. Norton (I know you're all thinkin "WTF")

but as you can see I have a much better and IMO accurate list now.
People on here are also fun to talk to.

Im always learning, over the last 7 or 8 years ive really started to appreciate the little guys, guys like Wilfredo Gomez, Ricardo Lopez, Calderon, Pintor those type of fighters.

The main difference tho since i joined the forum and got a computer is that i get to hear all the rumours and fight week hype, the buzz around the industry all the little things that u dont know when u just tune into a big fight then switch off after the show.

Its definitely improved my standard English, I also learnt that their is a ridiculous amount of fighters with great resumes that are hugely underrated and overlooked, it also helped me realise that boxing is in a terrible state at the moment and that the currect fighters are highly overrated.

              Greb, Dempsey, Tunney and Wills.

We've had some great threads on those 4 fighters, and although I give Dempsey the hardest time of that group, he has skyrocketed up my Heavyweight list, and I now rank him above Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson and Jack Johnson.

I've learned a lot here. One way is that by debating I'm compelled to review/research other opinions. Sometimes I have to double check my own. It stimulates my thinking, and that's a good thing.

There have been many fighters that I hardly knew anything about Greb, Tunny, Ike Williams, to name a few. And my opinion of Louis and Dempsey are higher now then they used to be. To many fighters to name but there have been many that I have learned about. Almost every fighter I have learned at least something about them since posting here.

I completely agree. I lurk the history section for the most part. I learn alot from you guys here in the history section, and find myself reading alot more about fighter that I either overlooked, or just plain didn't know anything about.

This site(especially the History section)has expanded my knowledge of the past great fighters, as well as the current crop that we have now.

To me the most well respected and knowledgable posters can be found in the history section. And I appreciate the wealth of knowledge that you all bring to the site. I've been watching Boxing for roughly 30 years now, and it still amazes me how much I learn by coming here daily. Hell, I would go as far as to say even Bert Sugar himself could learn a thing or two from some of the posters here.
