U guys probably already know this but i was quite shocked to read it today, Gene Tunney The Fighting Marine, The self confident and wholesome ring maestro, the man who enjoyed Shakespere, all the arts and mixed with all sorts of high class people ended up an old drunk! An alcoholic. His Daughter also spent most of her life in a home for the criminally insane.

I never expected that. Well my question is does anybody know why he ended up an alcoholic? Mabey because of his daughter? Id be appreciative of any info on this guys cheers

Well he did live till he was 81. Tunneys daughter wasn't committed till Gene was in his seventies and after she had murdered her husband, so I would gather to say she had to be in her 30's or 40's at the time of commitment though I cannot say with any authority.

A society drunk is not the same thing as a street drunk. :-)

I've heard much the same but I always wonder about the definition of "drunk." Frank Sinatra was a "drunk as was Dean Martin.

Very true!.. Winston Churchill would be considered an alcoholic in todays circles. I've never heard this about Tunney though. Maybe he had a late life crisis, because there's not much he hadn't done.
