  • Ali-Frazier 40th year anniversity

Next month on 3-8-2011 it will be the 40th anniversity for The Fight of the Century-Between Muhammad Ali and Smokin' Joe Frazier.

What are your thoughts 40 years later?

Are there any activities that you know of for this occasion?

Activities, I do not know of, though I remember the fight (& the build-up) vividly. Frazier had won me over as a fan in the years covering Ali's exile, but I wasn't so sure he was upto beating Ali. When he did (closer on my card than any of the officials, mind), I thought we could count on him as being Champion for a good five or six years more. I cannot think of another high-profile bout in my lifetime which lived upto & beyond its boast specifically as a fighting spectacle. It was a simply enthralling clash, & to my mind, one of the best fights of all-time. I think it was more entertaining than their more-heralded third fight, truth be told.

Their skills & reflexes were stronger, & it made for a stronger fight, first-time around.

It was correctly labled "The Fight of the Century" and it lived up to all it was supposed to be. It was a sporting event that transcended all media at the time. From Life magazine doing a photo expose to tv and radio mentioning it constantly in the weeks prior to the fight.
I was a kid and remember my PE class sat in the gym and spent the whole hour discusing the fight. Matter of fact everywhere you went people that normally did not follow boxing were talking about who would win and which fighter they liked. Something I have not seen since at that level.

The night of fight I was dragged to a meeting my mother had at a church and being bored I went outside. There I found a rather large group of people gathered around a radio listening to the fight. Perhaps it was that fight and that moment that got me into boxing. If not, at least a seed was planted that grew inside me.

I think this was the biggest and most anticipated fight in boxing history.

I remember everybody was talking about the fight.Even grandmother's who didn't like sports or boxing where talking about The fight of the Century.

And the fight lived up to the hype.

I hope there is a 40th anniversity dinner like there was for the 20th anniversity.I hope they show the fight on ESPN or another channel like they did for the 20th anniversity of the fight.

After all,it really was The fight of the Century!

I think the second Louis-Schmeling fight was the most anticipated fight in history, by Ali-Frazier was definitely the fight of the century.

It's hard to believe it's been 40 years ago today.

ESPN had Bert Sugar on today talking about the fight.ESPN and the USA Today had many very good articiles about the fight and the atmosphere surronding the fight.Angelo Dundee was on Muhammad Ali's website today taking questions and answering them.

There is a dinner tonight in Philadephia celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Fight of the Century between Muhammad Ali and Smokin' Joe Frazier.

It seems like just yesterday when i was a 13 year old kid that the fight took place.I don't think there has been a bigger sporting event then March 8th 1971,when two undefeated Heavyweight Champions fought in The Fight of the Century. The fight lived up to all the hype when Smokin' Joe Frazier clearly won a 15 round UD,leaving him as the only Heavyweight Champion!!

What a night. What a fight. What a fanatical 3 months leading up to the fight!! There had never been a sporting event (Or maybe any event) like this in the history of sports!!

It's hard to believe it's been 40 years...

Yup, I watched the fight with my dad yesterday. Speed, technique, power, heart, chin, it had it all. Beautiful fight. It went down to the last round IMO.
