Who had the better year/Can you find a better year?

This should prove interesting for anyone who likes doing research about fighters. Find fighters and pick any starting point in there careers and find the best single year and make a comparison.

Henry Armstrong from 5-31-38 till 5-31-39

    Armstrong defeated amongst others

    Barney Ross
    Lou Ambers
    Ceferino Garcia
    Al Manfredo
    Baby Arizmendi

Barney Ross from 6-23-33 till 6-23-34

    Ross defeated among others

    Jimmy McLarnin
    Frankie Klick
    Billy Petrolle
    Sammy Fuller
    Tony Canzineri 2x

Within that period, Armstrong defended his 147 pound crown 8 times and his 135 pound crown once. He was also outweighed by more than 10 pounds in 5 of those welterweight defences - which is the personification of true P4P greatness.

Barney Ross - Past Prime (Although even this version of Ross is still a solid win for Henry)
Lou Ambers - Prime (Widely regarded as one of the Greatest Fights of All Time. Ambers was later to defeat Armstrong in a rematch)
Ceferino Garcia - Prime (Solid win - Garcia was later to win the 160 Title)
      Al Manfredo - Past Prime
      Baby Arizmendi - Past Prime

Barney Ross' wins over Canzoneri & McLarnin may tip this in his favour - both Tony and Jimmy were considered two of the P4P best at the time. Personally, McLarnin for me is a Top 15 P4P fighter and a win over him is immense.

I'd say, just on sheer quality alone, Ali's back-to-back wins over Frazier & Foreman in 1974 is phenomenal. That's 2, All-Time Top 10 Heavyweights in the space of a few months.

I know Greb beat Tunney, Loughran,Gibbons and Norfolk within 12 months, 4 of what the top 15 ever lhws in a year takes some doing. Mind you can do 12 months of Grebs career at random and usually get at least 3 HOFs

Any number of Greb years could be picked out. He had almost 50 fights in 1919 and went unbeaten for the whole year, which included going 4-0 against Battling Levinsky, 4-0 against Bill Brennan and wins against Mike Gibbons, Billy Miske, Joe Chip (who had inflicted his only KO loss), Willie Meehan, Jeff Smith, Chuck Wiggins and Soldier Bartfield.

In 1941 Shorty Hogue went 12-2-1, which included wins over Archie Moore, Eddie Booker and Lloyd Marshall. And he followed up by fighting Charley Burley early in 1942.
