  • Greatest African fighter?

    Just watched Joseph Agbeko decision Yohnny Perez and thought that he may become great if he dominates the Bantamweight division. It got me thinking of who was the greatest African fighter of all time, I guess its a toss up between Nelson and Tiger, I don't really know enough about his career even though I'm Nigerian. Who do you think is the greatest African fighter of all time and name some other notable African fighters.

    Definitely between Tiger and Nelson, I'd go with Tiger.
    Some notables;
    Jacob Matlala
    Brian Mitchell
    Kid Bassey
    Vic Toweel
    Dingaan Thobela

          **** Tiger but I'm partial to the guy in my avi. You will be too once you pop in the Gomez and Fenech II bouts.

            Yes I know of him, I believe he beat Beau Jack? Brian Mitchell a South African in the lighter weights? Don't know any others but I'll be sure to check them out when I've got time, any recommendable bouts?

            Excellent fighter until Hagler ruined him, he did pretty well though. Haglers win is a good example of a great win against a game and prime but not so great in terms of legacy opponent.

            Glad to hear the Nigerian is thought as the greatest, but strangely enough despite the competitive rivalry between Ghana and Nairaland, I'm a much bigger fan of the prof. I've also seen those 2 bouts, and of course against Sanchez. The last bout mentioned in particular is interesting Azumah took him to hell and had such a small amount of experience, who knows maybe if Sanchez hadn't died he may not have been able to beat Azumah suggesting they met again and may not have been as great as people predicted he could've been(I'm not sure I worded all that right hopefully you understand, my standard English = not so good).

              It's Tiger. Nelson is a distant 2nd.

                3-time champ in 2 divisions, 22 of is 47 fights were world title fights, 18 combined defences, only stopped once in his 14th pro-fight by Salavdor Sanchez, all other losses are to world champions so he only ever lost at the highest level. He always gets my vote for greatest African boxer.

                  For me, there's nothing wrong with Tiger as a pick but I'm leaning toward Nelson.

                    I wouldn't quite say distant, but to me, I agree it's Tiger by a clear margin. Nelson is a deserving number-2, no question, but he's no higher than second spot to me.

                    Bassey is a great shout hardly ever mentioned in any capacity anymore.
