Which made Hearns nigh on impossible to counter. The fab 4/5 were all great boxers yet none took many rounds off Hearns. I thought Hearns was the clear winning against Benitez. Benitez made him miss a lot but didn't offer much offence himself which ultimately cost him the fight.
That's the way I remember seeing it it too. But I haven't watched it in a while.

Benitez did not throw any punches in rounds 1-5 maybe 6, didnt get to watch that round. And still he was competitive because not Hearns threw landed, than he began throwing punches and won all rounds. Making it a close fight, and two knockdowns, that where slipps were counted, so this fight is all ***ed up lol

He was trying to time a reachier opponent without catching a quick jab on the nose or a KO punch. It's understandable that it took quite a lot of time for him to adjust to Hearns. Benitez did better late in the fight, though in all fairness to Tommy Hearns he did break his power hand.

You can't give away the first half of the fight against Hearns and expect to win a decision. Benitez improving coincided with Hearns hurting his right in the 7th or 8th and even then he wasn't lighting up the lamp very often. It wasn't particularly close to me, nor was it a fight I'd want to watch again in a hurry.

I'm sorry how did Hearns hurt his hands, without even touching Benitez LOL

I never read anything about him hurting his hands, I think your flat out making ***** up. What a lame excuse, Benitez DID not throw any punches in the 1st 5 or 6 rounds,, but when he did he won, almost every round. Thats why its a majority descion....

                  Now you have:

Benitez did not sweep the second half of the fight or close to it. You can't win rounds just by making your opponent miss. Hearns looked in complete control throughout. Note how in the final round the commentators were joking that Benitez would need a "double KO" to win.

He did hurt his right hand. And one major reason Benitez was not throwing punches was because he didn't want to get caught. You can't wina fight with defense alone.

I don't know too many people who thought that or even speculated that the fight was close enough to go to Benitez. Certainly not Larry Merchant or the other commentators who knew Benitez needed a KO to win.
