I was just going to post about this, glad someone else already did and in much greater detail than I would've. I was in a McDonald's when I saw the news crawl on the bottom of the screen or news update or whatever they call it here on News 12 Long Island. It just said "Mike Tyson and Julio Cesar Chavez inducted into boxing hall of fame", it didn't even mention the other names or that it was the International Hall of Fame and not the World Boxing Hall of Fame. Quick question on that. Is one of those considered better than the other or is a good thing for someone to be inducted into either one? Is there a huge difference? Is one more respected than the other? I think it was last week I also saw on that same news channel it said "48 year old boxer Evander Holyfield says he will regain the heavyweight title" so these inductions were much better news than that other item. I'm a huge fan of both Tyson and Chavez.
Didn't 30 to 35 used to be considerd old for athletes, especially boxers, where guys are getting beat up? Was it always a common thing for former boxing greats to stick around until their late '40s to early '50s like Holyfield, Holmes or Duran or is this a more recent occurence? I've heard of Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson coming back because they needed the money, but did a lot of other guys stick around too long?

The sport is unregulated, in this regard. Team sportsmen retire sooner on average, because as they fade, they are told they are simply not wanted by clubs. Boxers don't face such restrictions.

Yeah but shouldn't they? Don't they still have to be medically cleared to fight? Shouldn't boxing decide they won't let someone compete anymore instead of just leaving it up to the fighter?

The Stallone induction I don't get either. Maybe Gary Cooper and Theresa Wright should be in the baseball hall of fame then since they were in the Pride of the Yankees movie. Then again, I heard the WWE Hall of Fame has a celebrity wing, so maybe boxing is starting one of their own. At least Pete Rose was able to get into THAT one. Screw all those hits, all the guy had to do in the end was get piledriven at a couple of Wrestlemanias lol.

Nice class, except for stallone. I guess James earl jones also deserves to be in because he played jack johnson.
Rocky was huge in the 80s an generated interest...but this is a huge **** up on whoever picks who goes in the hof. Cant wait to hear Mikes speech though, hopefully its as funny as Holmes was.

I like this class. I have no problem with Stallone getting in. The Rocky movies has done a lot for the sport. Also nice to see Harry Carpenter getting posthumous recognition.

Stallone deserves his induction, for everything that he has given to the sport of boxing.I don't know where this sport would be without him.
Philadelphia is one of the greatest fighttowns in America if not THE greatest. Frazier, Saad, Taylor, Giardello, Qawi etc. The list goes on and on...
