  • Joe Gans vs Benny Leonard

    At light weight 15 rounds.

These men are almost always in the top 3 for lightweights, how do you guys think this matchup will play out?

Something for you guys to discuss(civilly!) while I'm gone for a while.

It has to be Benny Leonard. He was just too good of a boxer. Joe Gans was never overly impressive. He was more entertaining to watch because he would mix it up but I don't see him giving Benny Leonard too much trouble.

This would not be an exciting matchup that I would care to see.

You're way off on this Carlos. Gans was so technically proficient he was known as "The old master" even though he died in his 30's. He was 140-10-16 (96) and fought the best of his era. He was also the first African American to win a world title. Considering the era he fought in he has amazing stats.

As far as a fight with Leonard goes, its a tough call. Both were amazing.

Recommend me some of his good fights! I've seen Mcgovern, Herman, Nelson and a couple others.

I can not get into him at all. While he wasn't quite as skiddish and cautious as Leonard (which makes him a little more exciting), he just doesn't seem as slick as Benny.

How do you beat Benny Leonard? Do you try to outbox him or do you pressure him and box aggressively?

Ted Kid Lewis was only able to take Leonard to a draw. I don't see any way that Joe Gans beats him.

You've probably seen everything I've seen. Gans did throw the McGovern fight though.

Not being as slick as Benny Leonard does not make a fighter unskilled. According to every boxing historian that I've read, and newspaper accounts of the day, Gans could do it all. I think its very difficult to judge his style by the old, grainy, black and white footage that is shot from a distance and herky jerky.

I'm not saying he wasn't skilled, but I will say that he is not as skilled as Leonard from the little bit that I have seen.

I think Benny could grind out an SD. Joe Gans controlling the pace early on, fluent and moving with Benny trying to box at Gans' pace. In the middle rounds Benny speeds up his movements and aggresion after realising he cannot out-box the old master. He employs a classic boxer puncher style and starts laying some heavy hits on Gans in the middle rounds.
In the late rounds Gans re-groups and also becomes more offensive and the two trains clash for an all out was to the finsh with Benny just getting the nod.
