Definitely high up there (but certainly not number one), although during the comeback I think he relied more on toughness and power than skill to win. Dunno if I'd call him more athletically-based or skill-based, he was a pretty even balance in his prime.

Bigger, faster, stronger, better. Talent wise he might be the greatest. Skill wise, I gotta give it to the people now a days. All sports have evolved, so has boxing.
P4P he's the greatest ever - no doubt!

And the emperical evidence for this is what exactly? If anything fighters in more recent eras don't learn the skills that were common in Robinson's day. The vast majority of fighters today don't know squat about infighting for example.

everytime i see ray robinson i think of sugars shane mosley

and thus like mosley he'd more than likely look invincible vs most brawlers of any era

but skillwise, i figure he like mosley can also be outboxed fairly easily by someone with good fundamentals like forrest and made to miss all night against a defensive wizard like mayweather

edit: the most skilled fighter in my opinion should be someone who isn't that athletically gifted but has great wins through "boxing"

There isn't any empirical evidence --- this is just something people parrot baselessly because, "all sports have evolved." The notion that the craft of Boxing has actually regressed is approached with the same open-mindedness of a Priest reading The Origin Of Species.

He was the most skilled fighter in history; no one since him has been as skilled.

He is probably the most skilled ever in the offense department but, overall he is Top 5 IMO.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect an answer: When you try to pin them down on specifics they go into evasion mode.

I'd have him in the top 5 ( not 100% on exact pos. ) and I can't argue with the Old Experts who knew him. He's up there with PEP. B. Leonard, R.Leonard, McFarland. I'm not a fan of Floyd;s style sometimes but I rate him in top 3 of say last 20 years with Sweet Pea and of course Pac-Man ( who has a lot more of everything else than the other two and more exciting than both put together). Last word on Sugar Ray,.....I will say it's not just talent that made him the G.O.A.T. he is, his Chin was Ten out of Ten and his ability to put guys to sleep when he got in trouble ( and what a finisher ). Sugar Sweet.
