Greatest Fighters Who Never Won a Title

    #1 Jerry Quarry

Jerry Quarry is one of the best Heavyweights of all times. He out boxed Floyd Patterson out punched Earnie Shavers. He was flashy, good looking; but never became champion. Quarry boxed Jimmie Ellis and fought toe to toe Joe Frazier; on these occasions if he had only switched tactics he could have been Heavyweight Champion of the World. When I became Heavyweight Champion of the World I dodged him, purposely.

I have a hard time believing Foreman was more afraid of Quarry than he was Ali and Norton. Because other than Jose "King" Roman those were Foreman's only two fights after he won the championship.

I don't know about being afraid of Ken Norton, but he could punch

same with Ali, he has admitted that he was scared to death prior to fighting Liston the first time, it is not that surprising, Liston was a very intimidating champion

if Jimmy Young was good enough to beat George, Quarry would have had very good chances too (better beard and better power)
Foreman claimed he was afraid of Norton and didn't want the fight. I take what Foreman says with a grain of salt because he can make some really outrageous comments. His work on HBO was filled with classic comments. But not in a good way.

I never doubted that Foreman said it as it's a well publicized quote. What I'm saying is what Foreman says now has no bearing on what he was doing and saying in the 70s when the fight could have happened. He's always nice about Ali now too but didn't have much good to say about him 35 years ago (in fact the dislike was mutual). As for ducking Norton, it's strange he would sign to fight someone he claims he wanted to avoid.

I posted links to two articles where he seemed willing enough to face Quarry and I certainly can't see why he'd be running scared of him. After all he fought Ali and Frazier who both beat Quarry quite handily and Chuvalo who also beat Quarry. I think he just enjoys playing the humble nice guy nowadays. He'd probably claim he ducked Mother Teresa too.

Exactly and I don't buy his "humble" act one bit.

Liston. I thnk he had the chin and the power to compete with Foreman. But Liston would still lose. A fighter like Shavers did not have the chin.

I give Oliver McCall a shot (if he doesn't start crying). Not because he was that good. But he's probably the most physically indestructible Heavyweight I've ever seen.

what would be the point of lying ? these great champions like Ali, Foreman, Frazier, etc., they all have huge egos, why would he genuinely admit he feared a man he has never fought ?

                      for mother teresa

maybe you're right, I do think he likes to act humble sometimes too, but I don't see the point of claiming he feared Quarry

perhaps he was a bit worried about his style

or maybe he had Quarry in high esteem (he ranks him as the best fighter ever to never win a wrold title), so to say he ducked him is a way of honoring him ? I don't know, it remains one strange statement by Foreman
