Walcott had great footwork Sonny you may be right that Tunney would beat him but you can't say Jersey Joe didn't have footwork.
Re Marciano I'm talking of a prime Marciano not a faded Dempsey and as many punches as Greb could throw they didn't have Marciano's power behind them. 15 rounds in either the 20s or 50s when the ref isn't going to stop Marciano for cuts chances are he is going to land a few so you can't write off his chances that easily imo.

i disagree GJC.. Tunney was a master craftsman and the first ever scientific boxer.. Walcott's footwork was nothing more than a little shuffle here and there which would be nothing to Tunney who possessed a lightening fast jab and the same goes for Marciano who would be speared with the jab and right-cross from Tunney while trying to chase Tunney down, Tunney would be well aware that all he had to do was jab & move to beat both of them and he would be huge odds-on to succeed

Think you are underrating Walcott a fair bit there but still. Problem is we have so little of Tunney at HW and the highlight of his career was those wins over a faded Dempsey.
I have my doubts that Marciano wont land on him over 15 rounds. If we look at the Greb Tunney fights apart from the 1st and last ones which either one won convincingly the others were pretty competetive. Marciano hits a lot harder than Greb and whilst I think Tunney would land a lot on Marciano I think Marciano would soak them up a lot better than Greb did. You may be right he'll beat Marciano but I don't think it will be the stroll you suggest

Maybe not a stroll but i see Tunney winning 12-3rds.. i have read Tunney has legitimate excuse for his defeat to Greb and barring that one hiccup he would have been undefeated his entire career.. Tunney's defeats of Tommy Gibbons & Tom Heeney are also excellent victories and like Ray Arcel said"Tunney retired before his prime so we never got to see the very best of him"

Walcotts footwork was second to none imo, there's times where he looked like a ghost moving around the ring, too say he had nothing more then a shuffle is just silly. Also Tunney is not the only one capable of figuring an opponent out, if you think Tunney can beat Walcott by just jabbing and moving you're mistaken.

sorry but his footwork was not in the same league as Tunney's and nor was his boxing, although a shrewd cute fighter i would not class Walcott as a threat to Gene Tunney.

Walcott outboxed Joe Louis you have to remember. Even with Joe Louis at 33 that is still a remarkable achivement.

Considering Tunney didn't beat a single prime heavyweight of that calibre, I don't see what you're basing that on.

Yeah, Gibbons in his last fight at the end of a long career. I don't think Gene would have beaten the Gibbons that Dempsey faced so easily, if at all. Tunney only beat Greb decisively twice in five attempts (Greb was thought to have been robbed in at least one of them) so it's disingenuous to suggest the loss was just a hiccup. A 19-year-old Tommy Loughran gave Tunney a hard fight, yet Tunney never gave him a rematch (Greb fought Loughran SIX times).

tunney was fleet footed like ali fleet footed charles was not charles had good foot speed he could circle move in move out but back pedaling is not something anyones really good at cept tunney and ali and maybe the old masters with their weight on their back foot.

i think this would also give tunney a large advantage at HW.

I think someone is confused and mixing up footwork with foot speed in this thread...

                      Walcott had great footwork
                      Tunney had footspeed
