Spinks vs Holmes I and II

What did you think of these two fights, Eddie Futch who trained both fighters chose to be in Michael Spinks corner and it was a wise move as Spinks won both fights the first by UD the second by MD

Both good fights. I had Spinks winning the first and the second a draw.

Larry was a touch post prime, but the first six rounds of the return showed that he was still very much world class.

Spinks had two superb gameplans and excellent 15 round stamina. Full credit to him, he closed out both shows very well.

Funny but I ran into Spinks before he moved up to heavyweight at the McCrory-Roger Stafford bout. Matter of fact we shared an elevator. I just said "Hey Michael" and he said "Hey" back. At the time I regretted not advising him not to move to heavy and to test the waters at cruiserweight first. Glad I didn't because he did well at heavyweight, alot better than I expected. I felt Holmes figured Michael was going to be an easier opponent than he was and was suprised by the speed of the lighter fighter. Holmes did take the second fight more serious and I truly think he won the rematch.
But Holmes learned the hard way about dissing the judges. Right after the first fight he told the boxing judges to "kiss where the sun don't shine".

        Great tale there!

I must admit, when I did first see Holmes vs Spinks 2 Holmes was so far ahead at around the 7th or 8th round that I thought it was ridiculous to suggest that Spinks could retain his title. I'm the biggest Holmes fan but much as it pains me to say it, I did have Spinks evening the affair to a draw.....thus retaining his title. But he was just that bit busier down the stretch and Holmes was tired from his early efforts.........I think he really banked on an early stoppage win.

It was one of those fights where the most dominant rounds were scored to the challenger (Holmes) whereas the champion just seemed to nick enough to blag enough of the others. A bit like Ali vs Norton 3!

No two ways about it............both were great, especially in the rematch. But prime for prime I think Holmes wins a very secure decision. Come to think of it.....if both fights were twelve rounders I'd probably give Holmes the nod too.

Spinks deserves credit for executing fantastic 15 round strategies perfectly........excellent pacing both nights.

The first fight was basically just a weak performance by Larry because he had an injury and didn't throw his usual amount of punches. Spinks never hurt him, it was a disappointing fight. Larry whooped him in the rematch and got robbed.

No fighter in history had been able to move up from being the light-heavyweight champion and grab the heavyweight championship, and the odds said Spink would not change things.‬..

Mine too. Surprised judges didn't give him the first, since they usually are biased towards the champ. I guess they didn't like him.

Shame the judges stopped Larry at 48-0.

Totally. Would've loved to see him go 50-0 and then retire or maybe keep going until he's beat.
