  • Wilfred Benitez

Many years ago, we ran a benefit for Wilfred Benitez, and he wasn't good then. Now I just want to cry when I see what he and others like him have become.

Please take a look at this video:

The story of Benitez is very sobering. I always felt he should have retired alot earlier than he did. He pretty much was done as a fighter in the mid 80's, the hamsho fight should have been his last fight. Many feel that he fought too young and taking blows while you are 15 without the headgear was pivotal to his current state, as the brain still develops at that age.

When he came back like 1989 with emanuel steward was a huge mistake. He was not going to be a serious contender again.

I wrote a 3 part series on his career on a boxing site. I still regard him as one of the most talented fighters i seen, and at age 17 beating a future hall of famer is still one of the greatest achievements in the sport. He also was the first man to capture a 3rd title since Emile Griffith did it.

He should make a comback...tho seriously many great fighters like Benitez have suffered terrible health problems due to their former trade and it is sad that they finnish up penniless and in need of 24hr care, the sports governing bodies should have a sickness & pension scheme in place to help ex boxers who fall on hard times later in life due to their former profession just like almost every other trade has.

He's like a walking zombie now. Probably has no idea that he was a boxer.
