You can take someone's word against Duran's if you want. And you might be right, or you could be wrong.

But it is the only time Duran quit in a fight. And he said he had stomach problems. So I choose to believe him, you can believe that he quit for other reasons as much as you want to believe them. But I think you are probably wrong.

Duran proved that he could handle losing why did he not quit against Camacho or some of the other fighters that beat him?
It's best to listen to someone close to Duran. In this case, Duran's friend Fabio Matos:

"Maybe I shouldn't say this because Roberto is my friend, but after the fight, Duran told me in his hotel room that the story about the cramps was false. He said he had to tell that story because he knows people want an explanation." When asked why Duran quit, Matos said, "Roberto couldn't do anything with Leonard. Duran was being humiliated. Aware that he was being humiliated, he quit." Carlos Eleta, Duran's longtime manager, agreed with Matos' assessment. "Duran didn't quit because of stomach cramps. He quit because he was embarrassed," Eleta said.

Does Fabio Matos really sound like a friend of Duran's to you? He does not to me.

Duran said he had stomach problems, I will take his word over Matos. Duran has been out of shape in many fights and he lost many fights. But he never quit.

It's a black mark and it bugs me because he's one of my favorites, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying his whooping of Davey Moore or the wars with Leonard and Barkley.

So because Duran, himself (the guilty one), said it, that automatically makes it true?

          Wow.

Of course I lost respect for Duran that night. But time is a great healer and you can't take away what he accomplished before and after that fiasco. You can't justify what he did or pretend it didn't happen, but you also can't dismiss his entire HOF career because of it.

Duran was not a quitter. He came in fat and said he had stomach problems. I know that sounds like a terrible excuse but you could just look at him and tell he was not in shape to be fighting a prime SRL.

It would be interesting to see the outcome if in the 1st fight SRL boxed instead of brawled with duran.

Either way both are ATG's in my eyes

I lost a little respect after the fight but it was temporary. But the man had tremendous pride and that night he had enough. When he quit he told the ref. "No more clowns" meaning he had it. He wanted to prove his machismo and win or lose a war. Not be embarassed by his opponent. I do look him as a great fighter and think his accomplishments far outweigh the night he said "no mas"

Many times Boxer's are forced to quit because something is wrong with their body. I believe that it is very possible this was the case with Duran. He has never shown himself to be a quitter in over 100 fights. But he did show himself to be one of the best warriors of all time in the ring.

Why do you want to believe so badly that Duran quit for no good reason? He never did show that tendency in other fights. Matos sounds like a back stabbing low life who had something against Duran to me.
