  • Thoughts on Jake Lamotta

Had a debate on NSB. And, sometimes I think Lamotta because of his style his boxing skills and boxing IQ gets underrated.

IMO Lamotta was an amazing fighter. He beat Marcel Cerdan, he was the only man to beat Ray Robinson in Ray’s first 135 fights and the only man to beat Ray in his 20’s. beat Fritzie Zivic, tommy Bell, tony Janiro and Bob Murphy. Very deceptive boxing skills, amazing at rolling punches, truly one of the greatest in my opinion.

Most definitely. He was a very skilled inside technician. He had a beautiful lead hand, great example of a short-armed guy who was able to use the jab effectively. He looked like a monster against tommy bell

      Go away.

Back on topic I think LaMotta was an excellent fighter I mean anyone who can even have a close contest with Robinson is great but, to actually beat him and then go on to have other VERY close fights with Robinson is sensational.
Excellent bodywork and infighting (could also jab effectively as mentioned above) and boxing IQ which as you said often gets underated.

One of the toughest boxers ever.

Lamotta is an ATG. Even though SRR got him back he still whipped that ass.

One of the finest ever to use that Bullying type style, so relentless and he had a superb chin, ring I.Q wise he is definitely under rated a lot of people just see him as a Caveman which he certainly wasn't.

each to his own opinion yet i have thought him overated for more than 40yrs whereas others rate him highly, the Holywood movie Raging Bull which is mostly fiction is a large part of his acclaim

I would also say its a large reason why he is looked at as some crude face first brawler too.

yes it could well be, yet that film is so much fiction it is best to ignore it when talking of LaMotta, i also think LaMotta himself fantasizes about his career when interviewed, he comes across to me in a similar way as Bert Sugar does in that everyone is ****** except themselves when it comes to talking boxing.

Depends on how you rate him I guess. He was damn good, though I can't claim to be an expert on him, but he belongs in the top 10 middleweights of all time and if you don't put him there I'd say you are underrating him.
