  • Was Muhammad Ali Overrated Purley In Terms Of Excitment?

    A simple question.

Some say Ali was so exciting, others feel he was overrated in terms of excitment.

I hear alot of people say his fights with Mac Foster, Shavers, Young, Norton, Bugner 1 & 2, are very boring and some even near unwatchable.

He was never really known as an exciting fighter. He was never really in fan friendly fights unless when pressured like in the Frazier fights. He was known more for his special skills and hand and foot speed. And for winning when he was not supposed to win, i.e. Clay-Liston, Ali-Foreman.

I never considered Ali overly exciting, but he brought an aura to almost every fight he was in that made me want to watch. I never felt duped by him like I did by lets say Mayweather-Baldomir where Floyd made all sorts of claims only to play it safe. This is of course much easier to say in hindsight.

Those fights was at the tail-end of his career. After watching last weekends Klitschko vs Peter fight you have to say that Muhammad Ali was very very exciting to watch

Muhammad Ali is one of my favourite fighters to watch. Definitely one of the most exciting, imo.

Ali vs Shavers and Ali vs Norton III were not boring at all. That's the first time I've heard them being mentioned as such.

Maybe I'm bias, cause he's my favourite fighter but I don't think there are many boring Ali fights; even Ali vs Ellis, which many consider dull, was exciting to me.

All a matter of taste, and personal preference, I guess.

"Excitement" is a purely subjective thing.

Some people think that aggressive fighters like Tyson, Duran, and Pacquiao are "exciting"; I think they're boring as all get-out. Those same people often think defensive fighters like Mayweather, Whitaker, and Toney are "boring"; I think they're thrilling. If you like chess-match fights like I do, Ali's very exciting. If you want aggression and guys trying to knock the other guy's head off, Ali's probably not that exciting.

Ali wasn't boring he was something special and always had entertaining fights. Might not have been wars but still entertained.

And Im a hard person to bore. I am a HUGE Bernard Hopkins fan. He was exciting back in the day but even today I love watching him fight. Klitchsko fans think I just hate but it takes a lot to bore me. And it's usually only fights like Klitchsko-Peter and ruiz fights where they just clinch the whole time with no offense. Hopkins uses clinching as a weapon were as Wlad uses it so he don't get knocked the **** out.

Very overrated, guy had a 60% KO ratio despite being bigger than most of his competition, he was fighting LHW and Cruisers for the most part. You all talk about Wladimir clinching, Ali invented the clinch, that's all he did, that and dance around for a little bit in the ring when the opponent was 10 feet away, for some reason that was somehow made him entertaining. His biggest defensive strategy was to lay on the ropes and let the other guy beat himself into exhaustion.

Ali's biggest claim to fame is his gift of gab, he knew how to sell a fight, he was brash and talked a lot of ****, he was very vocal, he built his own brand by proclaiming himself the GOAT and that moniker stuck
