Terrible call nonetheless. Buchanan should have simply been given five mins and the next round started.
Yeah I guess that seems correct.

So 5 minutes to recover and Duran gets a point taken away? Keeping in mind he was already warned by the ref to keep his punches up?

What if Buchanan is unable to continue after 5? Go to the Scorecards?

I think Duran knew what he was doing there, i think he saw the opening and just punched him in the nuts. With that said, still give Buchanan a couple extra minutes to recover maybe take a point and let it continue. No way Buchanan should have been robbed of his title that way. He was losing for sure but he had his moments and deserved to be allowed to go to the end.

No. It was an unintentional low blow during an exchange. If he can't continue, he forfeits the fight. It ends up as a TKO win anyway.

It is possible, but very unlikely considering the circumstances. Buchanan initiated the whole scene. Most people don't remember that or choose to ignore it. He punched Duran a couple of times after the bell, and then they both went into an exchange, and Duran ducked a punch and threw a right hand to the body as the ref grabbed him as well. It went low because he was ducking (like I said before, that scene is replayed in nearly every single fight. When a fighter ducks a punch and is throwing to the body it usually strays low) and because the ref was grabbing him.

It is also possible that he was retaliating for the punch after the bell by Kenny....

I don't think so though. It looks much more like a body gone low because of him ducking and the ref grabbing him.

Buchanan definitely threw the first punches after the bell.

Duran responded and hit him low. Whether or not it was intentional, is debatable. The ref should have given Buchanan 5 minutes.

low blow, cheap tactic and the decision should of been reversed by the athletic commission

I would agree with you if it wasnt such a direct nut shot. I have seen it many times, this fight I mean, it looks like Duran is looking right at the target and just goes for it. I don't think the action going after the bell should be retaliated with a nut shot. I never said Duran should be DQ'd. I think the ref should have given Buchanan more time after the between rounds and then commenced the next round.

I would blame the referee in this one. He thought it was a legal blow. Under the rules of the day a DQ wouldn't have been possible, but Buchanan could have been given more time to recover.

Either way, he was not going to win the fight. The real crime is that the rematch never happened.

Regardless, that fight should've been a DQ or a NC.

A ref simply can't DQ a fighter or change a ruling on a foul he didn't see. At worst I believe Duran should have been warned a possibly had a point deducted with Buchanan being given the allotted 5 minutes to recover from the foul. Unfortunately refs don't have the luxury of hindsight or instant replay during boxing matches though.
