How good could Frank Bruno have been if he hadn't trained like a body builder?

I guess thats one way of looking at it, although him and his trainers must of noticed that he was fading during the later rounds of sparring sessions. Fights were 15 rounds when he first started fighting, I just cant see how he could of ever lasted that long. He was clearly tired by around round 9 of the Witherspoon fight, also I noticed he had no answer to Witherspoons overhand right. If a fighter cant adjust in fights then he is aking for trouble

I must admit I've never read that there is a limit on the amount of lean muscle that a man can put on a month. I'm sure it varies exponentially on the size of individual.....taking diet into account also as well as the type of weight training.
Just as a personal example, I had been training for an 11 mile cross country relay a fortnight ago. I gave up all weight training and dropped my weight from 160Lbs to 155Lbs in the two weeks previous. Since then I've been back on the weights and.......hell back to 160Lbs again. I'd like to think that at least 3Lb of what I've put back on is lean muscle that I had lost, perhaps the remaining 2Lb is down to hydration and a bit of body fat.....not that I can tell.
Of course, of the 16Lbs Bruno put on between Williams and Lewis in six months, 10Lbs might have been lean muscle, 3lb might have been extra body fat (you wouldn't notice this in the slightest on Bruno) and the remaining few pounds may well have been down to his hydration, or how much food he had eaten that day. I guess weigh ins can be intimidating.........Bruno might not have eaten or drank much before the Williams weigh in, It wouldn't suprise me if a decent meal for a guy like Frank weighed a few pounds in itself. Who knows?
I'll have to have a re read some of Bruno's training habits and have a look as to how much distance roadwork he did. True, it probably would have helped his earlier title attempts.Last edited by Sugarj; 07-11-2010, 05:38 PM.
